Where to look for small companion?

I have a yearling currently in a paddock on her own - she certainly isn't distressed or bothered, but I do feel she should have a companion of her own species (getting far too attached to us) especially at this age.

I have been looking for a shetland or minature to keep her company, but everyone seems to be asking silly prices for them - ideally I don't want to spend loads, as pony would be purely a companion for now, and I'm not bothered about it being a "mongrel" so long as it is friendly. I have scoured horsemart, ad trader and various other sites. I don't want to go the "rescue centre" route, as last time we did that, it took months to get anywhere, and the criteria set down were so stringent it was ridiculous.

Anyone got any ideas of where to look?
 
Contact breeders, and ask them if they have any retired broodmares.
I was told by one breeder not to long back, that rehoming the retired mares can prove difficult, particularly in the current climate.

does it have to be a pony? Pixxie (on here) has a very sweet 15.2hh horse that is unable to be ridden... i would PM her as i think im right in thinking theres going to be very little cost if at all, but dont quote me on that

pony club website is another good one but usually they are stall going and ready to be ridden!
 
Very small companion ponies tend to go very quickly or be fairly expensive for what they are as they are in high demand.
Out of interest, why does it have to be as small as possible?
I agree that the "big" rescue companies seem to fart arse around - it's like they don't want people to look after their ponies for them, but local rescues tend to be a lot better - it might be worth approaching one of those.
 
"small as possible" more personal preference - I want something small and hardy, that does not need feeding up or fussing about with. Don't get me wrong, pony will be looked after, fed if needed, and regularly groomed etc, I just want something a bit more low maintenance. Also, we don't have masses of grazing at the moment, so something small is ideal. We are in the process of buying our own land, which will be turned into a small equestrian centre - stables, school x-country course - and I'd like a small pony that could graze the x-country track in the future.

I bought a mini shetland colt from this website not long ago for £150.. 90% of her new foals are weaned and ready to go about end of september..

Theres a good selection to choose from,
Ring up make an opointment and she will take you too see them all in the many fields :D..

(p.s my boy chello is in a field with stallion born in 06 named sponge-bob and hes always up for a nice cuddle when chello has had enough hehe! :) )

Hi,

The shetland I had was ages ago. I actually had another standard shetland that I rescued last week but he's now landed on his feet and has found a new home and is off on friday. I will probably pick up a few more waifs and strays in the coming weeks that will need rehoming, so if anyones looking, PM me with requirements! (I've got a busy few weeks of horse sales and always seem to come home with something needy!)
 
I might be too far away but I have a super friendly Shetland cross coloured are needing a good home as a companion. 11.2hh. Free.

Am looking at selling my welsh a shes 11.1/2hh, 3yo, well bred, typical welsh pony, lives out 24/7 and good with other horses.

my friend has a nice sec a that very nearly past but failed on "friendly" sadly she is not ;)

but seriously would love to be rid of her but she is prone to laminitis and has to wear a fly rug 24/7 as has sweetich and also coughs with hay ,apart from that she is lovely :D

why not try putting signs up in your local tack shop as we never buy the local add mag or have even tried advertising her as wouldn't of thought anyone would want her but if we seen an add in tack shop would be worth a phone call
