Where to look for yards?

Hi

So I came to the thought earlier where do you really look for those small little yards that aren't advertised online, like may yards aren't? The BHS website is good but not every yard is BHS approved, local tack shops and newspaper doesn't have anything in and can't find a facebook group... So then where and how do you look for a yard?
 
I did a search online for the places that were in the area I was looking and "livery". I did it by county and by town/village. That brought up quite a few listings websites plus old threads on here and other forums, as well as the occasional yard website. I also managed to find some local directories that way - most recently in the area I was looking there is a bridle ways group and they have a list of yards. I did also look at local riding club websites, plus also at their venues and whether they were yards. I was looking for somewhere with reasonable facilities though so it was more likely it would be advertised. Also when I went to see yards that weren't suitable I asked them for suggestions of others - I found a lovely private one that way that again wasn't suitable but could have been.

Had I still been struggling after all that I would have started ringing local riding clubs and trainers in my discipline for suggestions, as well as asking on here and other forums, and if all else fails driving around the relevant areas and calling in anywhere vaguely horsey or looking like a yard! You could also try hunts, competition centres, pony club etc. for suggestions.
 
word of mouth, the yard I'm moving to in a week has NO online presence at all, wouldn't even be able to find a phone number googling it. Asked a friend in the area and she mentioned her landlord had a livery yard and she'd ask if he had stables.

Rest is history :D
 
Agree with Fuzzypuff, having done all of that I then suggest a bit of time looking on google map on the satelite view and search in the areas you want, looking for the tell tail "grid" of fields and school. Then use the little yellow man (streetview?) and see if you can see a name to google or if not just use the road name. Finally, hop in the car to likely looking areas and have a good old nose around! If you happen to see riders then ask....

Unfortunately most of my friends have their own yard or are at the same livery as mine but will have another go...

Searched online but only came up with large yards a fair distance away from me, checked this forum, looked at my Pony club clinic venues and all at the same showjumping yard which is private. I'm just looking for a lovely little yard that I expect will come to me eventually.
