Hi,
I sold my boy in March (to a fab home) and now im getting itchy feet being horseless :(

I was at Hopetoun helping a friend at the weekend and it made me really want to get out competing. My last horse was a bit of a chicken XC so put me off a bit but id love to do some un-aff XC with a view to moving on should I begin to enjoy it.

Ideally id love to just share a horse as im supposed to be saving my pennies for a house deposit but im not sure id ba able to find a suitable horse (and owner). Does anyone have any ideas where to look?

Im a fairly competent rider and happy to put in hardwork and the £ as i know horses are expensive and time consuming.

I suppose i used to (perhaps wrongly) think that sharing was more of a thing for novice riders as a step to seeing if they could mannage/afford there own horse but now i seem to hear of loads of people sharing horses that have often had years of experience owning their own before circumstances have dictated otherwise (like me)

Advice and other peoples experiences much appreciated

x

Word of mouth, definately! I'd mention to everyone horsey that you know that you're looking for a share, even call up any old contacts/RI's/farrier/person who once came to clip your horse (for example)!

My first share came about when the Tesco man came to deliver our food shopping, saw my riding boots in the porch & mentioned he was looking for a sharer for their pony :D

Some time later, I then went on to share another horse when his owner fell pregnant. She wasn't actively looking for a sharer, but friend of a friend mentioned I was looking, put us in touch, worked fab for over a year.

If I was looking for a sharer for my horse now, I'd definately be asking around. Word of mouth is (generally!) so much more preferable to the lucky dips you get from an ad.

Best of luck with it :)

I have found word of mouth and this type of post of forums the most successful. I have posted ads on every website that I could find that did sharing and have had no response to the ads.

I think local tack shops are probably the best bet, however I put an ad on Preloved and Horse Share UK which got really good results when I was looking for a sharer. Also put a wanted ad on Preloved when I was looking for a horse to loan and got a call the very next day.

I've said to everyone at the yard I was at and I'll say to a couple if friends who livery elsewhere. Fingers crossed I find something as if not I'm going to end up buying another one and blowing my savings plan :(
