where to start? new ride!

At the mo im riding a friends horse which we are planning on taking to some shows this year. hes 9 and has been only ridden a few times a week for the last few years, so to the point hes got a few little problems...

he over reacts to minor leg aids
he over bends
he falls out on the right rein
doesnt bend on the left and drops his left shoulder
he either rushes his trott or over bends and does a silly prancy trott, same with canter

so... where do i start??

he is a fantastic horse and was broken in very well, he just needs reminding!!

thanks for any help!!
 
Are there any good instructors in your area that can help? I would go down the lesson route, hopefully being ridden regularly with the lessons will help him.
 
use trotting poles to regulate the trot and the canter. you can use them for everything. place them on a circle, down the long side, even in pairs in random places so he gets a rhythmn down a line of 4 or 5 them has a few strides on his own then if he loses the rhythmn then circle over a pair until you get it back. you can do transitions e.g walk up to the poles then trot so he has to go in a rhythmn from the transition and not rush. he will eventually get the idea. working on a looser rein over the poles will also get the rhythmn with a loose free neck and prevent the over bending.
Not that i like trotting poles or anything!!
 
Oh ....... he sounds just like my old boy when I got him 17 years ago at 10 ...... he was (is) always full of himself .... he is a Welsh x ..... tell me more about this chap, as he sounds really lovely, but I am biased

i love this horse! he is like a dream come true!! a true confidence giver (just what i need!)
he about 14.2hh connemara (might be cross) dapple/flea bitten grey hes in the stages of changing colour! as greys do! iv been riding him for a few months and we did a sponsored ride the other weekend and bless him being a bit unfit he took everything in his stride and gave everything 100%

He looks absolutley lovely and he is jumping so nice ....... the beauty of these 'willing' horses is that they always go forward and I think that is not a bad thing
