I'm a bit of latecomer to horses and now am lucky enough to have owned my girl for last 4 months. It's been a roller coaster but now feel we are starting to get somewhere with the riding. I would like to have something to work towards maybe do a dressage test but I haven't a clue where to start looking for competitions or what level I should aim for or what will be expected in a basic test? Any help is appreciated :) also would I have to have a show jacket / cream jods etc.?

Where are you based?

I'm taking my mare out to our first dressage in a few weeks, its just very low level unaffiliated but I'm still plaiting up and wearing a show jacket etc. I'm starting at Prelim but you can do walk/trot tests too.

Where are you? Your local riding club would be a good place to contact re competitions.

You could start with a Walk/trot test, if you want to take it slowly.

I would get a Tweed jacket, beige jods and a coloured stock as you can use that kit for most things (you may need a tie instead of the stock if you start to do any showing). :)

Not familiar with the area but I'm sure others will be able to direct you to some local show centres.

If you're buying new stuff get a tweed jacket and beige jods but you can get away with black/navy at low levels which I'm having to do at the moment as I have no pennies to spend on tweed! I always plait for dressage (unless they're a cob or native kept natural), its just smart.

What sort of things are you doing with her at home? You could just do a walk/trot test to take the pressure off, just take her out and get the experience and have a bit of fun. Has she been out much before?

She hasn't been out much. We are just doing basic schooling and having a couple of lessons a week where we are learning basic dressage moves. Don't want to do anything fancy I have no illusions of my own capability. Just fancy doing something for a bit of a change and to give us a goal to aim for.

Where about in Scotland are you, if you are near Edinburgh there are a few good venues I could point you towards.

Prelim tests are very simple, walk, trot and canter. I'm taking my mare out straight into prelim as I just don't fancy a walk/trot test, she's very green but its all experience and a bit of fun.

Just go for it :).

Thanks for the replies I will print off some tests and have wee practise in the school then take it from there. Will definitely try ti find. Riding club in the area.
