Where would I stand?

If I had a friend's children on the yard, not riding but playing with the horses, grooming and perhaps petting in the field, where would I stand if one got hurt? What about if I lent them hats-not properly fitting? A concern of mine today.

Is it your yard? Do you have public liability insurance? I have it written into my livery contracts that I will not supervise under 18's and that they are the sole responsibility of the parents at all times. I also have public liability insurance. If the children are under your supervision then you are legally responsible for anything that happens to them. It could be that it would be shown to be a complete accident, or, it could be shown that you were negligent. I have a feeling that if the hats don't fit correctly, then you would be shown to be negligent. They should be fitted and provided with hats by their parents ideally.

Hmm not sure. A while back a lady asked a child if he wanted to stroke her dog and the dog bit the child - owner was held liable and the dog pts.

Pretty sure that your liable if the horses injure the children but not sure about the other way round?

There will be better people than me on here that can say for sure :)

It is a private yard with only my horses on it. The children are in my care at the time-I am nannying or childminding I suppose. You have addressed my worries above!

You cannot be nannying as that would mean you are working solely at their home not yours, which means you are childminding. As it is illegal to childmind without being qualified and registered with OFSTED then I presume that's what you are? (if you live in the UK obviously). OFSTED and your insurance actively encourage safe interaction with animals as long as all risk assessments are carried out and you equip the children with the appropriate saftey equipment.
