whereabouts are you?

iv advertised everywhere when i was younger i would have gave my left arm to be able to ride a pony a few times a week all i seem to get is timewasters that want a days outing

Im having the same problem, i was a pony mad kid and did some of the shittiest jobs all weekend for a poxy 1 hr lesson and thought i was being given the world, lol. I need to sell my 12 hand pony, we cant find anyone to ride him, i keep having to enlist the help of my very slim and shorter friend to pop on to show he's safe, but it doesnt really suit eaither of them TBH, its very funny to watch though.

We have the same problem when we need a new rider for our 12.2. We are OK at the mo because yard owners daughter is pony size and will soon grow out of her11.2.
I would have loved a pony to ride and lookafter when i was a kid. Still would, but i grew too big!!

I have got 2 fantastic pony mad kids, who are very handy to have around... they are about but it is finding the right ones!

all i am lookimg for is a child between 5-13 to come a few days a week and brush, ride and just play with them no mucking out as they live out and no cost just a dedicated child to have fun with 2 very safe older ponys

Shame you are too far for my nephew, he's 8 and loves riding but doesn't get many lessons as my sister can't really afford it. A share type thing would be great for him as my sister is horsey and would be able to supervise and help out. But they are in Derby..... so anyone looking for a little jockey in Derby PM me!!!!

i have a pony mad kid next door that would love to come & exercise my 2 tinks but mum makes reasons not to, they might stand on her foot, she might get kicked, its very muddy......
the list is endless so ive given up whats annoying was when they first found out i had small ponies dad was very pally-pally with us trying to get an invite for daughter to ride, no issue with that i only assked that she have rider insurance (they are well insured, but!) and that it was regular not an hour here or there, needs to be kept up.
i even agreed to her being able to use for riding lessons for their younger boys (never gonna hurt the wee lass to get some lesson time in)

but now they are semi turned away untill bump arrives next month & only being long reined once a week.

They are all spoiled brats who expect it on a plate!!!

Sorry to be so harsh, but thats my experience. I would have crawled through fire naked to look after your ponies when I was a kid.

From riding at various places in the last few years, I have to say that most kids seem a) not very enthusiastic and b) totally clueless - and mores to the point, they don't want to learn.

Maybe I just came across all the wrong kids... but I used to help out on Pony Days and we'd do quizzes/points of the horse/tack etc even plaiting and such, and most of the people who came (ranging from about 6-12) were more interested in running around screaming...

When I first started riding (and before that... and even now

) I wanted to be at the yard 24/7, watching lessons, helping out, riding when possible and if I couldn't, I was reading horse books and horse stories and drawing horses!

Seems like all the true horse mad kids have been stolen!

Oh, and just to say... considering I can still fit in childs size jods... can I still be a pony mad child!? Pick me!!

I'm looking for one too, a kid (preferably a girl as I have a little girl age 5) who would like to come and hack out, have some lessons, help out at weekends perhaps (if she wants to), mainly as riding company for my daughter but to help exercise the ponies too. Can't find one anywhere

I don't even want any 'dirty' jobs doing, just turn up, I'll LEND them riding gear, and ride. You'd think I was looking for a child to buy one...

_Charlie_ if you were closer, you could definitely have had my daughter every weekend .... this would have been perfect for her

Gosh this just sounds totally unbelieveable, when i was a child about 11 i used to look after a yard for a woman and daughter who were away competing, they used to leave all the stables on a friday till i got there on sat so i mucked out 10-12 stables and then there were normally about 6-8 horses left behind so turn out and bring in, hay water and all the usual, less stables on a sun, but had to hay and water stables ready for horses coming back, in return i got £5 for the week end a ride in the menage on 2 of the horses.
I also worked at the local riding school in return for a lesson, and pulled ragwork in about 5 other peoples fields in return for a ride/lesson on their horses around the field.
Guess that is why i still work as many hors as i can and kids these days are happy indoors with parents looking after their fair weather ponies. sorry i know all kids are not like this but seems moer and more are getting like it.
Mini rant over

1) they don't like work eg grooming
2) they don't like mud, why do they always wear trainers and white ones at that.
3)they just want to ride but not learn anything more than that

Unfortunately the ones I've tried to recruit seem to have parents that want them to look pretty on a pony for an hour on a saturday a. As long as its not raining and b. the boots must come off before they get back in the jag (Darling). Don't even get me started on the pink grooming kit which is pristine and bleached after each use, god forbid they should bring horse fillth in the house. Sorry I appreciate most mums arnt like that, but I just seem to attract them, in fact my kids are almost ferrel in comparison and love to be covered in muck, wish they were more interested but boys will be boys.

Try your nearest PC Branch and Centre. Let the DCs know you are looking and they should be able to point someone in your direction. You're really looking and the smaller sibs of kids already into ponies - easier to catch at the age you're looking for.

Have you tried local riding schools (although if they have dedicated pony mad kids they might not let them go!). I was (and still am) that pony mad child (8 hours of leading and sh*t shovelling every saturday to earn one ride per month - that equals £2 a day - and I was so grateful for it!). I know when I was younger I might have bitten your arm off for that opportunity but I don't know how I would have heard about it. I rode at the riding school, wasn't really part of the wider horsey community, parents didn't have any horsey connections and I wasn't in the pony club or part of the local show scene. Never needed to go to the tack shop (except on special occasions for a bag of treats) and the only place I used to look religiously was the horsey section of the local free paper.
