My car is getting ruined on the farm tracks to the new yard so looking to change to a 4x4, i'd use this for commuting to work to and it would be my only vehicle.

Looking for...

decent offroad suspension,

manual diesel - frugal looking for 40+ mpg,

reliable,

towing would be very rare

a bit of luxury inside would be nice, leather heated seats, rear parking sensors, aircon, thats why i'm thinking perhaps I should be searching for more of a sports utility style vehicle (would this come under an MPV on autotrader?) as opposed to a 4x4 workhorse?

£4-£6k budget

So far i've been searching the 4x4 catorgory on autotrader, comments on any of these to whittle the list down please

Hubby and I had a Subaru Forester until a couple of years ago. We sold it when he needed to get a different specific vehicle for his business. We both loved it and still look wistfully at them when we see them on the road. It was older than the one in your link but the comfort level was superb, the bum-warmers were great in the winter and it could go anywhere. Would have another one in a heartbeat. The only thing to bear in mind is the ground clearance isn't as high as traditional 4 x4 styling. BTW not all models have the heated seats. I think you need one with the All Weather Pack to get those.

I currently have a CRV (petrol auto though, so very thirsty). I love it - it is probably the most comfy car I have ever had. Can cruise all day in it and my bad back never complains once! It is part time 4WD - but excellent in the snow and ice.

I haven't looked at all your links but, personally I love the Suzuki Grang Vitara for 4x4 capability BUT it is not suitable for towing more than 1 horse as far as I am aware ( and that depends on vehicle spec) and you won't get all the mod cons (ie heated seats etc) but if you want to ensure you don't get stuck in heavy snow/deep mud then that is what I'd pick as I love the look of them and with the high and loa ratio gear box and diff lock they ACTUALLY work off-road!!

Other than that, and for the budget you want I'd look at the Kia Sorrento or the Hyundai Santa Fe as they both have towing capability but you also get more spec with heatd seats and all that.
