I've only ever had bitches but I have spoken to three different people recently who said they personally found dogs were always more loving and loyal than bitches. Any views on this folks?

I think it depends on the breed as well.....Corgi's are naturally more independent and although Jack is 1000x more intuitive than Fizz, he does not need attention. He will soak it up if it's offered and if you are low, he won't leave your side but he is happy to just sit in the same room as you.

Fizz (and from what I've seen of whippets) they are more needy and cuddly by nature but Fizz isn't tuned in to emotions so doesn't pick up when I'm low which can often mean getting leaped on and toys thrown on me when I'm crying lol.

my first dog (male uncastrated) was fiercely loyal (to me), one person dog, not loving/affectionate, not needy, very obedient but quiet independent.
2nd, male castrated, very independent, not very obedient, not loving/affectionate,not needy, not loyal.
3rd, male castrated, very loyal, loving, very obedient, not at all independent, needy, a 2 people dog.
4th, un neutered bitch, very loving, very loyal, also very sociable, could be needy at times, very loving with me, not really trained but great recall (that's pretty much all I asked her for),
5th, spayed bitch, loving affectionate, gregarious, but still loyal-I can walk as part of a pack for hours but the moment I walk off on my own she comes with me, needy, great recall as 4th with obedience.

The 4th and 5th were/are lurchers and to be honest as long as the don't clear off and have manners I don't really train them as such. I just love their company.

so I have found bitches to be far more affectionate on the whole but I also tend to generally find them more sensitive and easier to offend so I think it depends on the owner and the individual dog and the dogs past.

We always have three dogs .
Two bitches and a dog .
Who was sitting watching me do the yard tonight in the sleet , the dog . Who was asleep on the bed , the bitches .
I always always would chose a dog .
MrGS prefers bitches .

I think it depends much more on breed, temperament and upbringing than gender. I always have bitches, can't really cope with the leg lifting from dogs. All my bitches over the years mostly flat coats, whippets and lurchers have been devoted and sensitive.
Funnily enough though I have had some experience of males. For a few years I walked hound puppies, that means they lived with me. I was always brought a dog and a bitch and I was surprised how affectionate the dogs were. Foxhound pups have amazing temperaments.

Chiffy - we always just walked dog puppies as they were so much easier. The year we did one of each I regretted it.
I prefer bitches in the house though and the pet dogs we have had have also been working terriers so they were faithful unless there was something worth hunting.

That's interesting Clodagh, I just loved having hound pups. They had a kennel in my stable yard and I had them loose with me whenever I was out there and they mixed with my house dogs. I taught them all sorts of obedience stuff and quite a few won 'best hound in his work' at the puppy show. They did dig a few holes in the garden though!

Thanks for so many interesting replies. I think I agree with those that say it can depend on the breed and probably the nature of the individual dog - a bit like mares and geldings.

I have only ever owned bitches but think it depends on the breed!

My mini schnauzer is very independent and more a one person dog. She's stand offish with pretty much everyone except me and my dad.

My lab is a Velcro dog, follows me everywhere and loves attention and strokes. Definitely a very needy dog. She's a daddy's girl though! If my OH is around she's with him.

My lab X Rottie is more independent but is very affectionate if she's in the mood! Anyone who says dogs don't like hugs have never met this girl! She's a mummy's girl :)

I've only ever had dogs, currently there are 2 JRTs and a collie. The collie will be a PAT dog when I get his paperwork sorted, the older JRT is a total softy and just wants to curl up next to me (or the collie!) and the JRT pup (19 months) is a really independent little person but will snuggle up with you when he's tired.

My schnauzer girl is on my lap as I write and my st poodle boy curled up at my feet. Both very affectionate, but the schnauzer 's def a one dog person...and its meeeee.
My previous dogs have all been female apart from my first corgi boy..all very loving...overall I prefer the females as I find them more tuned in to me.

I have to say dogs.
An example being I walking three, 2 of them dogs, one was my sisters and the other one I'd had for just a few weeks. The bitch I've had for over 10 years. I fell over dropping all the leads and when I got up the boys were still by my side. Where was the bitch? She'd carried on walking down the road without a backward glance! I love her though and personally like the more independent nature. Dogs do seem more needy.

i have one of each and have found the dogs were far more loyal than the bitches. Its my bedlington dog Flodden who sits alongside me as I do DIY, who comes in search of me when he realises Im not around and who will happily sit and look at the door I left by until I return. on walks tho he is the one who pretends he cant hear when I call him, until I hide. My whippet bitch on the other hand thinks of her own comfort first, as long as theres a warm bed, chair, rug she will settle there. When we are out her recall is absolutely superb, a whistle and shes there by my side, no backward glances. I have found that as a general rule dogs prefer women and bitches prefer men, but I suspect there are always loads of exceptions to that.

I dont actually believe that if you neuter either a dog or a bitch that it changes character. However I would never neuter till about 18 months by which time they are adults and their character is in the main formed. Nor have I ever had a problem with a neutered dog running to fat. My current bitch is neutered and my dog is entire. I have had neutered dogs and entire bitches and no change at all. However I do know a lot of dogs that are neutered too young seem to give off a confusing scent and are bothered continually by entire dogs. And bitches neutered too young can have incontinance issues. Also the running to fat issue in my experience ties in with people not modifying the animals food as it reaches adult hood, still feeding the larger quantities needed by adolescents and the novelty of a new pup wearing off and the amount of exercise given reducing

Both, but in their own ways. I have had various breeds and dogs and b*itches (always neutered). However mine have always been from rescue centres or unwanted, so not sure if that has an influence?

My male JRT does not like to be picked up or cuddled, but will sit as close as possible to me whenever he can. I belong to him.

My femal staffing cross wants to be constantly cuddled, stroked, fussed, sit on you lap...and I mean, constantly!

However I would consider both as loving as each other, but different. I'm soooooooo lucky.

I saw the title of this thread and just thought, its not about gender its breed. My whippety lurcher is the most loving an sunny natured creature I have ever had the privileged to meet. He loves everyone and everything without question. He likes nothing more than to be next to someone, snuggled up, head on their knee gazing lovingly into their eyes. My Oh says hes just a big suck up and is spoilt, and he might be a bit spoilt  But he is an incredibly loving and lovely natured dog and I adore him as much as he adores me :)

Very interesting replies everyone - thank you. Is it true that if a dog is neutered it loses quite a lot of its character?

Mine was chemically castrated, with an implant, at about 2 yr old, it lasted for 18 months. There was a change in him, but it was very subtle. However I did know when the implant had ran out and he went back to being entire. I have been to hell and back and only really gotten through it because of him, so I know him inside out, so not sure a lot of people would have noticed
