Hi I currently ride my youngster in a full cheek french link bit - does anyone have any suggestion what to change to after this bit - he goes well and is behaved but wont tend to go on the bit very easily ? ? :)

If he's a youngster maybe he needs to learn how to go on the bit correctly, and it could be he isn't yet strong enough to do so. Unless he's unhappy in his mouth I'd be leaving well alone.

Whether a horse works on the bit, in an outline, round (however you want to call it) or not has very very little to do with what is in the horses mouth, a horse does not even need a bit at all to work correctly so as long as the horse is happy with the bit it's in you need to work on the horses core strength, muscles and balance so it can develop physically so it is able to carry itself properly.

If you work on the horse's impulsion, rhythm, balance, and if he is relaxed and elastic, he will begin seeking the contact and offering moments of roundness, that he won't be strong enough to maintain as yet. Different bits, stronger bits, etc are not the answer. My horse is 19 and has been in a fat French link from the day she was broke to the bridle.

Hi thank you for all the comments - I will keep him on this bit and try encouraging him more just didn't want to push him too much with him being young - please note this is my first youngster (apart from my shetland - who I broke in myself and is an absolute angel) Thank you:)
