which bit for a horse that's heavy in a mullen but evades double jointed bits?

Hello everyone,

I have a Spanish 6 yo gelding, working at Novice dressage. He is currently in a mullen eggbutt, and gives a nice consistent contact in it, but is heavy at times and not very bendy. I have tried him in 2 lozenge bits and 2 french link, he seems to play with them all the time and is very inconsistent in contact, also goes behind the bit at any opportunity! I wonder if anyone has suggestions on where to go next with his bitting?

MB02 or MB32 Myler comfort snaffle? They're dressage legal and come in a variety of cheeks, so you can have a loose ring, eggbutt (without hooks), hanging cheek or fulmer (without hooks) snaffles.

I wouldn't go down the single joint route due to the nutcracker effect.

Agree with this was going to suggest the same thing. I hate single jointed bits except for the ones that are shaped to avoid the nutcracker effect like this one:

I find all horses that I have tried it on love this bit as it is shaped so that it does not sqeeze the tongue or hit the roof of the mouth like other single jointed bits.
