Which bit for my horse?

Hiya, I was wondering if anyone could help me with which bit would be suitable for my horse. He has a habbit of putting his tongue over the bit when he is asked to work in an outline or to avoid the contact, he also leans on the bit when he is asked to halt or when he does go into an outline. I do not want to put him in a bit that is harsh at all as he is not strong or forward going and is only in a snaffle currently. He has his teeth checked regularly and his bit is not low in his mouth. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

a straight bar nathe snaffle should help prevent the tongue going over the bit as the joint in a jointed snaffle hangs lower in the centre of the mouth. fit it fairly high or try a dropped noseband to keep it high. an equiami riding aid will prevent him leaning on you/the bit which he seems to be doing to use you as a crutch to lean on when doing things that he finds difficult and should be able to support himself in. both these things should quite quickly reeducate him and get him lighter and softer
 
Hi, thanks for that I might try the bit, I think a tongue layer can be added on to this bit as well so if he does get his tongue over it I could try this. If anyone else has any ideas I'd be grateful to hear them.

I'd stick with a snaffle if that strong enough but would probably try a straight bar..also consider a flash noseband which should stop him opening his mouth to get his tongue over.....Good Luck

Thanks I am using a flash at the moment but he absoultely hates it and I have to fight with him every time I try to put it on.

Maybe he's figured thats what stops him getting away from the bit

have you tried a drop rather than a flash some horse twist there jaws and do manage to evade a flash

A drop fits like a normal noseband but its doesnt fasten above the bit it fastens below so rather than a flash having a above and below strap it just has the below... but works very similar to a flash but is more like a olden days noseband

Edited to add so should stop horse getting tongue over bit as should a flash if fitted correctly and tight enough

What do you think of getting a tongue layer on the straight bar instead of the noseband as I think he would object to this as much as a flash but I'm not sure. Do you anything about riding aids to help to get the horse into an outline as I think this may be useful.

the equiami riding aid really stops them leaning and they start to work in a nice equal contact. you dont have to fiddle with it as it doesn't need an extra rein. we had one cob who leaned on a cherry roller but went back into a snaffle after a while of using this, even for jumping. very often these issues are habits and laziness (on the horses part) and it needs something to show them how to go in a nice contact. there is a website so you can google it
 
Thanks but the riding aid is a bit too expensive, do you think that a bungee would work in a simialar way instead?
