Going to start mouthing my 2 year old and was wondering what bit is best to used was going to use one with keys but someone said that can get them in the habit of playing with the bit. So what bit do you find is the best?
I used a mullen mouth straight bar just to bit my horse, but now he's being backed he goes in a double jointed happy mouth snaffle (the bit in the middle rolls so he can play with that quietly). I think it's a lovely bit and would use it again - horse really seems to like it!
I have a happy mouth with a rotating peanut/lozenge type link but he has chewed it and it has got quite sharp so once we're working him again I will be getting a loose ring double link (french link type) snaffle with a copper content, probably the neue schule starter- not that I'm considering spening more money on my broken horse at this stage of course
I usually start with a happy mouth with central lozenge. More importantly (I think) it has the fulmer type cheeks so that it can't get pulled though the mouth when they are learning to turn! Once they have the basics I go to a Sprenger KK or Neu Schule.
