my horse is usually in a snaffle but last week put him in dutch gag 4 x coutry for bit more stoppin power .been hackin out in it coz im just enjoyin the extra help but feel cruel as gags can be quite severe even though im bein very gentle with it.can anyone suggest a bit thats stronger than an eggbut snaffle but not as harsh as a gag.many thanx

You could try a Pessoa with roundings, a Wilkie or a loop ring snaffle. Alternatively, if you are happy riding with two reins, then keep the Dutch gag and ride off the snaffle rein but keep the gag rein for when you need extra brakes.
 
Put roundings from the snaffle ring to the first one down. I ride in a KK universal which is similar to a gag but a bit less leverage. The roundings give a bit more than a snaffle but still pretty mild. I ride like this all the time and it suits us both.
