I bought my irish draught with a snaffle mouth which was fine in the school but i went out hacking and realised i had no brakes as he is a big boy!!

I have tried him in a straight bar rubber pelham which gives me brakes but he hates it!

When i pull on the reins he resists so much he throws his head around and is really uncomfortable to ride like this.

Can anyone suggest a bit that is not like the pelham but has brakes???

Need to know how he is strong really... ie does he lean, lift his head, drop his head, open his mouth, fix his mouth etc?? Also does he overbend or poke his nose when he resists?

Gags, tom thumbs, cherry rollers, kimblewicks and waterfords are all popular bits for stronger horses

Hi, he doesnt lean, quite the opposite! He lifts his head high. He is only strong when in company and i need to slow down with the snaffle we took quite a while to stop

He was previously only ever hunted and so at 12 years old i have alot of schooling ahead as from the few times i have schooled him to get him on the bit is virtually impossible!

Not sure if maybe the straight bar after a snaffle is the problem but surely if he was previously hunted he had a stronger bit than that?!?!

The pelham is good for horses who have their heads in the air when they tank off. Being ID, he will have a fat tongue and low pallete and a rubber mouth will be too thick for him.

You could try a metal one with a port which allows room for the tongue, or a kimblewick.

i am slightly baffled by all the different types of bit and have looked at the mullen pelham and the ported pelham.

one has the port for tongue space and the other doesnt but still says it allows room for the tongue????

Which one ????
