I got back in the saddle a couple of years ago and for the last year ive been part loaning a gelding. He really dosnt like hacking out alone, it took me ages to get him to go round the block which he does now without any real problems however he will only go round clockwise. If I try and get him to go the other way round or on a proper hack out he dances about and keeps heading back to his field. Hes the only horse in the field at the moment as hes stabled on private land so its not as though he wants to get back to his mates in the field. I went out with a friend a couple of weeks ago and he acts totally different. Im wanting to get stuck in and work on this napping business but not convinced on the bit the owner has just bought or his bridle come to that so thought I would just buy my own. Im not very experienced and I know hes just trying it on but my confidence is getting better but its like the battle of the strongest at the moment. Any advice would be most welcome.
Talk to the owner about his issues. If you were my part loaner and decided to 'up' his bitting without consulting me I'd consider it grounds to terminate our contract!
What bit is he currently ridden in and what evasions is he using with his mouth? What kind of mouth confirmation does he have?
How is he in the school? Can you get an instructor to give you some lessons and work through your issues?
