My new baby cob was being ridden in a thick eggbut snaffle and in my opinion it was fitted too high. He has a tendency to open his mouth when ridden so his old owners put a flash on!!!!

Since getting him home I have lowered it and taken the flash off and he seems more comfortable. Not riding him much as he is having a new saddle made. Saddler agreed the bit is too thick as he has quite a petite pony head and thinks a jointed snaffle might be a better option.

Having rooted through the tack room I have the following in his size;

Loose ring KK lozenge snaffle(think it was a training snaffle) in a warm gold metal (cyprium or something)

French link fillet baucher snaffle

Myler comfort snaffle - dressage legal with no hooks or ports, just a slightly curved mouth shape and a barrel in the middle.

Which would you choose?

(btw he has had his teeth checked)

I'd try the KK lozenge and see how he goes. It has worked well with any of my babies or worried horses and hasn't got the pinching action of an ordinary snaffle.

Would either of the bits you have mentioned be suitable for a cob with a fleshy tongue ?

My recently purchased baby cob came with her tack - french link and flash noseband. She was totally ignorant and unschooled and the bridle was immediately changed to a mullen mouth s/s snaffle and a cavesson.

The steering, start, stop and self carriage in walk are all established now and the up/down walk/trot transition is in. She is ready for more refinement and I am really undecided what to use on her.

Despite being built like an outhouse (clyde x ID), with a chest and neck a bull would be proud of, she is soft in the contact but does have a habit of curling her neck back if she loses her balance. I think her previous owner held on by bracing themselves against her mouth. She has learnt how to take the contact forwards and down, I don't want to undo this with the wrong bit.

No idea, but your bay cob sounds just like my daughters. She was a percheron x - would love to see a pic of her. My baby cob is built like a tank but only 14hh.

This one is only 15.2hh, she has a nice mouth and I want to keep it that way, because if she gets strong, it will be a bit of a no contest as to who wins !
