Hi, my mare is normally ridden in a vulcanite pelham which she used to go really well in for jumping and hacking and a french link hanging cheek snaffle for schooling. She has been getting progressively stronger and more difficult to control over past year. Have had all usual checks done, physio said she was in fantastic shape and was one of the most supple horses she had treated. So I have come to the conclusion that for some reason she has become unhappy with having a bit in. I have tried lots of bits and have various problems with them all, mainly no brakes! So today I tried a German hackamore, not sure if I had it a bit high but would rather it be too high than too low. She went beautifully, much more relaxed and very easy to stop. The only problem I have with this is the shanks are very long and I found it difficult ride without the curb being on. So ideally I would like to find something similar but with shorter shanks. Has anyone had any positive experiences with any of the other hackamores? Have seen a flower hackamore and an english hackamore which look like possibilities but not sure if they are just nose pressure or if have curb effect too? Sorry its so long just don't want to waste money buying lots of different ones if I can help it. Just in case it helps I do have regular lessons and instructor is as baffled by her behaviour as I am. I am a confident experienced rider so don't rely on reins for anything other than slowing down when she not listening to seat aids. Any suggestions welcome thanks.
