Hi I backed my 3 year old this year in a french link loose ring snaffle Happy mouth.
He went quite well in it but I just think its quite chunky in his mouth. He also opened his mouth in it wen i took a light contact and sometimes went over bent.
I will be starting him again begginning of next year as a 4 year old and will be competing in dressage so was just wondering what bits you use on your young horses.
Are the HZ or KK bits any good?

I've got a KK ultra bit and it's brilliant. My mare is older (5) and she goes well in it and she can sometimes be fussy in the mouth but not in the kk :)

I bought mine unintentionally - paid £1.04 for a loose ring off ebay and it was a kk!

Mine are both in loose ring french link snaffles and have been since they were youngsters. They come in lots of different thicknesses so maybe you could try a normal stainless steel one as the happy mouth ones will be thicker. He was probably just opening his mouth to mouth the bit as he is green and over bending can be a common schooling issue with some green horses. With a bit of schooling, you should be able to correct this.

I always use a simple fulmer snaffle, often a myler but recently had a youngster who found the myler moved to much which he didn't respond well to and he put his tonge over a mullen mouth so he's in a Rockin S snaffle now, unfortunatly not dressage legal but might use it on the next one I back. Never tryed the KK range

I've bought my very fussy horse a NS trans-angled lozenge bit he seems much happier in it then the other curved single jointed and frenchlinks I tried. He is much happier taking a contact (very inconsistant before) and happier to take the bit forwards.

I agree if the thickness is an issue, I love the NS bits, I have my mare in the verbidend, she goes well in as she has a big tongue, but a small mouth! I have a youngster who I will be starting soon as I looking at either a myler or an NS bit, I'm looking at a full cheek though as a starter bit and they tend to cost that bit more!

None.

I backed my 3 year old over the summer in a soft rope halter - he knows nothing else and is ridden out at all paces in it.

His paces are beautiful and balanced. Without a bit to lean on he is nicely balanced in canter.

We don't touch the reins except to ask for what we want. They are certainly not there to support the rider.

well mine wasnt technically a youngster - a green 6 year old but I used a kk dynamic RS ultra fulmer on her and she loved it - i have just upgraded to a hanging cheek which suits her better now. My fulmer is now for sale on ebay - obv biased in my recommendation!
