I have a small puppy Bichon x, who is 4 and a 1/2 months I would like to start giving him some bones to keep his teeth clean, what is safe to feed please???
Ask for rib bones to start on - bones from the leg are much harder (especially beef)
I am sure he will soon get the hang of them
My spaniel is nearly 14 and has had bones since he was a puppy and has never had anything 'dental' done by the vet even though they constantly check his teeth
For a young pup of a small breed I would personally start off with something like a chicken wing.....,make sure it is at room temperature and not straight out of the fridge and hold one end of it whilst the pup chews the other. You may even want to bash the wing with a hammer a couple of times before giving to the pup for the first few occasions.
Alternatively, chicken carcasses are a good introduction as they are primarily cartilage and softer. (You would only need part of one for your dog!)
Then, build up over time to lamb and pork bones. Some small dogs turn into avid bone chewers and can easily do substantial damage to beef marrow bones....so, just read your dog!
not chicken or poultry bones! the fact that they are so much smaller means that puppy will happily chomp through, then could swallow a fragment or something that could get lodged in his windpipe, personally i would steer well clear of poultry
It's cooked chicken bones that cause problems, not raw.
My pup has whole raw chicken carcasses, wings, thighs, necks, lamb spines and necks, turkey backs, beef ribs.
He also gets the bigger bones that people warn against, all our dogs have been fine with them, each to their own, his dad snapped a tooth last week in a freak accident which was non-bone related, crap things happen sadly.
Although as mentioned, you might want to start off small, chicken wing bashed with a meat tenderiser or something.
Look at their teeth, it's what they're designed to eat
