what’s everyone wearing to ride in that don’t rub their ankles like a cheese grater as soon as they’re off the horse? I’ve just sold my mountain horse long boots finally accepting that though they’re comfy to ride in they gave me blisters instantly off the horse (even just walking across the yard) 🤢

Wanted: black long comfortable smart but don’t need to be posh (no bling, but not calgary’s either) leather boots.

Also wanted: lace up or pull on comfy jod boots - any style/colour for hacking

So - which boots are you loving?

I absolutely love my Ariat long boots (zipped but with fake laces at the bottom). I've had them for 5 years now and they're SO comfy.
I believe they're these (or these are the most recent version of mine)

I am sooo lazy. In summer I ride in ariat jodphur boots or jodphur trainers mostly these cause they are super comfy. I have brand new tuffa broadlands 😂 waste of money.
In winter, I ride in Ariat Windermere h2O or wellies 😂 i must have umpteen pairs of boots

Ariat Contour ll. Lovely soft leather and very comfortable.
My booted ankle recieved a hefty kick from a shod horse (due to being crazed by horse flies). It was an hour before I got back to the yard and my boot supported my swollen ankle and didn't have a scratch on it. Without the boot, I suspect my ankle would have been mangled.

Onto my list they go! Thanks

Also adding these to my list then!

I usually ride in Ariat jodphur boots with half chaps all year round and generally only wear long leather boots for competitions. I do however have a couple of pairs of Ariat long boots - I think they are the Bromont and Capriole and find them both very comfortable.

They are showing some wear and tear after 5 years, wrinkles in the leather and some discolouring but are definitely still wearable and useable and mine will have a few more years in them yet. No holes anywhere, the soles are still intact, and the insoles haven't even slipped - to wear they feel brand new. Depends on your goals and if you're not bothered about them no longer looking brand new over time I suppose but, yes, I will be buying a replacement when they eventually give up the ghost. :)

Anyone tried these?

Also opinions on riding in steel toecaps? I have a very comfy pair of redbacks already but I haven’t worn them to ride because of the steel toe caps - worried about getting stuck in the stirrups potentially?

Yes this is what I’m planning on doing - used to ride in tall boots all the time but I don’t need to / if it saves the ankles collapsing & rubbing then all the better

I've just gone back to my trusty Grasmeres. They're donkey's years old. For posh I also have the Ariat Heritage Contour II. VERY supportive, but wouldn't want to do too much walking. In the summer I'll probably switch back to my Scarpa hiking boots, with el cheapo chaps. I do have a pari of Dublin Altitude jod boots, which are amazingly comfortable, so much so I have stopped riding in them and use them for work!

I ride in Ariat Tellurides with chaps all year. Really comfortable. I have Bromonts too which are Ok but I don’t think walking around in them all day is good for them or me I keep mine for comps and some clinics.

The weight of a horse stepping on your foot can rotate the steel toecap into your flesh, according to a few posts on here.
Yes good point! I don’t really like wearing them around heavy livestock for this reason (although the job that paid for them refused to listen when I said I’d prefer my toes squished by a cow than crushed & chopped off by the steel,“health and safety says…” I digress) … I won’t start riding in them on second thoughts 🙈

I've just bought a pair Bareback boots and love them so comfortable.

They do look comfy!

Ariat Grasmeres. I've had them for twenty+ years, used very regularly and still going strong. I also have Toggi short lace-up ankle boots and long boots. Both the same age. Hunter wellies and Woof Wear waterproof ankle boots, equally ancient and still trucking on. I do look after them well, though.

I have recently purchased some Shires Moretta Constantina boots, they are lovely and supple and so far very comfortable to ride in.

Talking of boots, I may or may not have forgotten about two pairs I have in boxes, I hid them and forgot about them. Of course OH came across them yesterday 😂 he just slipped it in with the conversation… 😂😂 so I just said! Oh thank you for reminding me, I forgot about them!! He said ‘see you buy that much sh1t you don’t know what you have’

Ach well 😂😂 incidentally his £140 cycling top arrived yesterday that I treated him to so he was promptly reminded lol 😂
