which boots should i use for xc?

so im taking my two horses xc at the end of the month (tommy and Harry) harry is 11 and a dressage horse tb type, but not full hes 15.2hh and tommy who im hoping if he is any good at it i will be competing and combinded training and other xc based events :) hes a 17 year old 14.2hh jumping cob.
im just wondering what boots would suit them the best, when ridden tommy is always in brushing boots and harry in overreach boots although they are obviouslly going to need a little more protection. Also whenever jumped tommy wears the plastic jumping which i heard cannot be ridden in xc as they dig when galloping?
tommy has also had an accident with his legs (guessed) when he was younger, as he can become very agitated when having his back legs touched particually on the left. so if they have some soft type brushing boots which wouldnt be held to much and heavy, that would be great as otherwise he really would not stand still long enough for my to even attempt putting the boots on!

i would also be gratefull for any help on anything else i should wear or take with me!

But I would just use normal brushing boots for the first few times until you know they like it before splashing out on new boots.

thankyou! tommy is going to pony camp where he will be ridden twice a day and doing xc so I would need something that is going to protect him.
I have looked at those before andt thought they looked a bit hardcore, if you know what i mean?
tommy may look like a big hardy old cob, but deep down there both little babys! wimps :)
 
My horse often just has fronts and overreach boots for xc up to BE100, and hunts with no boots on at all. Go with whatever your horses are comfortable with for now - no need to stress Tommy out adding on back boots if you think he won't like them and he's not used to them, especially if xc is already going to be fairly new for him.

As for what to take with you... a spare set of clothes in case you fall off in the water! If you have them you won't need them, but if you forget, that's the day you get a dunking :D

haha i never thought of taking spare clothes with me, thats such a good idea!! yeah i should probaly leave him without but just if you thought like it was a safer option to put back boots on then he would just have to put up with it! harry has overreach boots ive tried with tommy but he just ends up striking out, he hates the things like hes never heard velcro before!!!! sorry whats BE100? and would you think woof ware would be the best choice of brands?

What height are you jumping?
BE100 is affiliated eventing competitions at 1m.

By pony camp do you mean pony club camp?

You don't need over reach boots if the horse doesn't over reach, also I would just stick with the brushing boots you have if not these are great boots http://www.premierequine.co.uk/PBSCProduct.asp?ItmID=13556879 or Woof Wear are good if that is what you want.

In regards of what you will need to wear when competing XC, you will need a body protector which is of the correct safety standard, a skull cap again of the correct standard, a number bib and medical armband. Colours, you can wear any top really, beige/white breeches (beige more correct at lower levels).

Make sure you take plenty of water with you if you won't have access to running water on the day to wash off/offer a drink.

yeah he doesn't overreach plus ive heard of horses tripping themselves up with them. However sometimes if his feathers start growing back and he gets feather mites from the mud this can cause him to overreach but ii just get the clippers out again.
at the end of the month we are ranging from 1'6 ft to 3ft.
i would stick with the boots i had if i had blue ones! ive only got blue jumping boots :( i heard that woof wear were good because they have no exact shape to them. I was recomened the preimer equine was and i have got alot of there gear so i will probaly purchase some of these :) yep waters a really good idea i think i need to buy a cainister as well! i wish they had like huge speakers playing music as you went round the field, it always makes me happier when i have my headphones on! :D

You don't need blue boots just because you will be riding in blue XC. Just use black boots, this is what the majority will do. Or you can put insulation tape around them to add some colour. http://www.fourstarbrand.com/wp-con...ue-and-Red-on-EcoGold-cross-country-boots.jpg

I honestly wouldn't stress about what boots you are using for the first time, just see if they like it first.

honestly, i have to admitt ive got a problem... im adictied to buying boots numnahs and headcollars, like litteraly! i have about 5 different pairs of boots 20 numnahs 13 headcollars im a loon i cant say no!! if i couldnt find any blue ones i would definatly go in the black but if i could find some blue ones that would be even better! i know there some out there that i just havent found yet! im seriously considering getting the first premier equine ones you told me about. i have no worry that they arent going to enjoy it! tommys very bold and can jump over 4 ft 6 (not bad for a 14.2) and his faviorite thing to do is splash through the puddles and jump over logs! harry on the other hand bit more of a wimp im just putting him in back and front brushing boots with overeach boots on the front as well :) thanks
 
I second what jess_asterix said.

Depending on where the camp is (their rules), you might need a hat with no fixed peak. Why don't you ring up the organiser and have a chat about what you need to bring? Then you'll know for sure. Have fun!

yeah i knew about the non fixed peak thing for camp. but im pretty sure that you can have one on training days as long as you have a body protecter, i think.
