My mother has been volunteering at an animal charity for the last couple of years dog walking. This is coming to an end, and she wants her own dog - she normally goes for 2 - 3hour walks each day, and prefers bigger dogs - but has to find something that is good with children and a very bad tempered old cat! Any ideas of breeds to consider (or avoid) would really be appreciated! Thanks so much

Rather predictably I would recommend a rescue greyhound

They are fabulous dogs to have around, are lovely with children and can be great with cats if you make sure that you get a 'cat safe' one

oooo she sounds like a rehoming centres dream, lots of time for a dog with lots of energy! wonderful, i would recommend mayb a dalmation, lots of them without homes at moment it seems, or a springer/springer x or a boxer/boxer x or erm....anyother poor dog being rehomed due to owners lack of research on excercise levels needed! let us kno wot she ends up with, lucky doggy!

Id say sounds ideal for most breeds, so long as its not a tiny breed that cant keep up!!!
Ensure cat friendly, although grumpy cat would prob set guildlines from day 1!!! (my soppy 2 didnt! silly buggers!)
Staffie rehoming is in need as there are LOADS looking for homes! if she likes that kind of dog! but if she wanted a lab etc would also say appropriate, especially if she is walking that distance a.k.a. fit, not obese lab!!!

we've got two flat coat retrievers...love long walks, great with kids...and for some strange reason adore the yard cat - to the point of licking the cat so much everytime she sees the dogs she rugs for cover!
