Which Breed of Dog next???

WOW Vicstress !! Auldmoor was a VERY respected dane line indeed. Hopeless really ..if you were brought up as a GD that is the dog you will prefer:D

Mum bred the Valedane line......which were all out of Auldmoor bitches :D

Mum came out of it though - too many nutters (much like horse showing!) haha

Think you're right although I wasn't brought up AS A great dane :D I was allowed to sleep in the house at night and everything :)

I'd say GSP's are far from ignorant, they're DESPERATE to please. They are very easy to train and willing to please. My boy was out of puppy class and in with the big boys within weeks. (I know several like it, my boys not just a fluke!) recall, off lead heel, immediate down at distance etc etc all very easily installed! ;)

My dog trainer likes their attitude so much that she said she would have one. That's someone who does competitive obedience with her collies, so I think that shows what they're like to train.

I do love Wirehaired Vizlas though! :)

It's just an observation from having lived with the GWP and the HWV, it's always been the GWP comes back eventually the HWV comes back straight away. The GWP comes across as more headstrong. I'm very fond of both breeds having grown up with them :D

I am guessing when it comes to the GSP as not lived with one but from spending lots of time ring side growing up, have heard that they tend to be worse than the GWP - it could be just one of those myth things though lol

Our GSP's are very good at recall but you are right about them coming back when they are ready and usually with some quarry in their chops that they shouldn't have :o.

We had ours trained with a specialist gun dog trainer and he liked them very much but did say there was a fine line between intelligence and arrogance with them. We tried bog standard puppy classes but the trainer their had no idea how to deal with their exuberance.

We have one who is great to recall and the other is a bit more defiant but both equally lovely :).

That's more what I meant lol - all of ours have come back................eventually :p

i have a GSP and he has ridiculous amounts of energy and is constantly on the go until it is dark- at which point he goes into a state of unconciousness and you can't get him to move!

I never did a lot of training with him as a puppy but he has a superb recall- he comes back flat out as soon as i whistle.
we recently took him on a holiday to Devon and he came hiking with us off the lead and was never an issue to recall, even with all of the new smells, other dogs etc.

(we left the Doberman in the caravan with my OH as her recall truly is AWFUL! :))

i would only have a GSP if you like walking for hours on end and then when you get home have time to play fetch in the garden at least 3 times a day on top of the mammoth walks!
