Hi

My wife and I are after buying a couple of dogs. We both work so the dogs will have full run of our reasonably sized and fenced garden and shelter in our summer house which is quite warm. I wouldn't buy a single dog as we're both working and they'd get lonely so would buy two for company.

We're after a couple of small (not miniature) to medium sized dogs with not-too-long hair. Of course, we'd take them for walks everyday and we have plenty of open space nearby as we're semi-rural.

Could you recommend any particular breed?

Ordinarily I would suggest a whippet - since my answer to anything is whippet/greyhound

- but I am not sure they would be suited to the conditions you describe? You might be better with something like a terrier?

Depends on whether the dogs were going to come into the house when you and your OH are back from work, how warm the summerhouse is going to be in the winter etc.

Pinscher, not the miniature one, the standard, very tough medium sized short haired dog.Not many about though.Any collie cross or medium cross breed, but they will bark if left to their own devices all day, any dog will, except most lurchers but they wouldn't like the set up.Are retired racing greyhounds too big?
If you are going to get 2 dogs and they will be left alone a lot be prepared for them to be much more attached to each other than they are to you!I wouldn't buy 2 pups from the same litter in any event, you are asking for dominance aggression problems there.Puppies wouldn't cope with your set up so maybe 2 older dogs from a rescue? But most won't rehome to people who are out all day!Your choice may be narrowed down to ex racing greyhounds,as they are used to being kennelled and left alone for a long time. They are lovely dogs and there are so many who need a home.

That said, you could probably get away with a couple of whippets if you fixed up a pig lamp in the summerhouse. In fact if you put an old sofa in the summer house with a pig lamp over it, you would probably struggle to persuade the whippets to come back in the house when you got home

My whippets live out on the yards while I'm working in winter and summer and they are fine. They do have coats and 'under rugs' on though.

hmm, tough one.
two dogs together are gonna be difficult to train! you need to seriously consider whether your lifestyle suits a dog.
What if the dogs bark and the neighbours complain? Then what will happen to them?
Think carefully.

Patterdales are great little terriers very similar to Lakelands as suggested above!!

Only thing is we as breeders won't sell 2 pups to the same home as you often end ups with 2 pups the same age fighting, and as they are very evenly matched it can be a problem!!
We got our bitch at 13weeks for that exact reason as the person that had her also had her sister and they were fighting a lot!!
Might be worth getting one now then maybe in 3 or 6 months time getting another one!
