which calmer?

ive never had to worry about using calmers for my horses before but i now have a young throughbred that needs a bit of chillin out. i was wondering which ones have you used? and which ones worked for you?
 
I chose other: Equine America's Magnitude. It's £15.99 for a 6 month supply and knocked the socks off my mad mare.
 
Depends on your horse. And on your grass (if you have any)

Magnesium calmers will only work if your horse has a magnesium deficiency. (but to be fair, the grass is quite devoid of it atm)

But if i had to plump for any of them I would say SoKalm plus.

Not according to my vets, they told me if a calmer doesn't have magnesium in it then there's no point feeding it. However this was for my nutty mare who was seriously in need, so with something not quite so 'mad' it may be different.
 
Global Herbs Supercalm and supercalm instants. Chilled out my abused rescue pony no end, I literally could not get near him when he was not on it, but he became really chilled and affectionate when he was on it.

They may well have said that, but it doesn't disprove the grass theory, really (rather it lends weight to it) and I stand by it.

Most horses atm will have a slight magnesium deficiency. Some horses need more than others - and so that's how it works.

I've had both of mine on Magnitude and it hasn't touched either of them at all. I have heard good things about Good as Gold by TRM. This is what I'm going to try next.

Edited to say one is full TB, the other 7/8th TB.
 
Whatever you do decide to try make sure you give it a fair trial of a few months, they don't work overnight. Unless they're the shots that you give before work etc.
 
That is a good point - lots of people try them for a week or two and then give up because they see no results. Worth persevering.

IMO Global Herbs is the one with the most science behind it - but science doesn't always seem to work with horses!

Tried MissMoo on Magnitude and found it didn't really help her at all. Found Oxyshot works for her as she only really gets stressy at shows.
 
One of mine has been on Magnitude for 7 weeks the other for 3 weeks. The advice is to wait 3 to 4 days for it to get into their system. Any longer than this is not the calmer it is the work you're putting in or something completely different, like the season!

I personally would not bother with NAF Magic as I tried it with my mare for a few months. To begin with it worked a little bit but she then seemed to build up a resistance to it

and it didn't really have that great an effect, considering how much it costs!
 
The only one that IMHO actually works is ProKalm from Science Supplements. It is not magnesium based (lots of calmers are based on magnesium, but then it is very cheap).
 
I used Global herbs supercalm on my old TB mare coming off box rest and it worked well, athough it does make them more fizzy for the first few days.

I'm now trying Mollichaff calmer on my new TBx as he's not stressy, just winds himself up in the school. Will see how that goes!
