Hi has anyone used magic calmers before or can reccommend me a good short term calmer?
I will be transporting and then stabling for 5days a 12yo upset horse (having his best friend PTS next week) I have posted about it in New lounge but unsure about calmer. I have heard Magic calmer is good as its herbal so can give slightly too much without major worry. I just dont want him hurting himself while being loaded/transported then stabled(espec dont want him damage the stable as then he wont be able to stay at yard and the only way we can keep him there is as YO is letting us stay rent free well for 200haybales!!).
We are rescueing him as his owner was going to have him PTS aswell even though he healthy as she didnt want to sell him and he cant be left on his own. I do know him have ridden him for her for about 6 years and we have a good bond, so once he is allowed out at new place I will stop calmer.

I have used Magic calmer but wouldn't say it's brilliant, it does take a slight edge of some but others doesn't make much difference. Why don't you ask the vet for some ACP tablets? We also use Sedalin gel (or paste but the gel is better)for a horse that is scared of the farrier, it doesn't make him sleepy but just chilled out. Again that is vet. Maxavita's is also a dood one to try if you don't want to contact the vet. Best of luck.

My sister has just recently put her horse on a calmer just for the short term, not because he is naughty to ride, but he is an ex race horse quiet ride but if he gets out of his routine and cant go on a ride first thing in morning or out in the field first thing he is very fractious in the stable, goes tucked up and trashes his bed and doesnt eat. With this bad weather we have really struggled getting him out and keeping to his strict "regime"
So she has put him on Ralax Me calmer although not cheapI have been quite impressed, she did the loading period for a week, then he is now on maintainance, it really made a differance to his behavoiur. He wont need it forever, now the snow has gone and we are back to the routine he like I think she will take him off it. I recomend it 100%

I've used Magic and Blue Chip calmer with no effect. About 5months ago I tried Nupafeed and it's made a big difference.

Thanks guys. i think k trip to the saddlery is in order to see what they stock. I do have acps already for clipping my other horse so if all is failing i will have them on standby, just didn't particularly want to use them for 5 days. Will prob use for travelling tho as will be safer all round.

I have used Magic before shoeing for my TB mare as she got very stressed unfortunately it didn't seem to make any difference at all but I guess it varies with different breeds.

One of mine has Magnitude and seems to work really well!!- much to my amazement/disbelief as I've always been v sceptical of calmers generally!

If your horse is v stressed then maybe some Sedalin Gel from the vets- it may work out cheaper than a calmer too!
