I have a very jumpy mare who is currently on full turnout and D&H Placid and coping nicely. Unfortunately due to a change work (and country) she will soon be moving to a yard which keeps its horses stabled most of the time, although I have been promised daily turnout there will be no other horses for her to be with over night.

I know for a fact that she is prone to becoming agitated when shut in so am looking for something a bit stronger than the Placid to help keep her chilled until she gets used to the new situation.

I was thinking along the lines of magic 5*, but I'd ideally like to know what's worked for other people before I let myself get lost shopping!

I have found horse first relax me worked wonders after trying many of the others, he is a sharp eventer that's gets stressed easily, but he still feels energetic and able to do his job :)

We use Magic - which also came best in a recent H&H test. (Although we'd been using it for years.) I was considering swapping to Palcid; so I'm intrigued that it might be less effective. I think I might stick with what works!

However if you are not competing something valerian based is going to be far more effective. Although not competition legal - for the simple rason that it works and is therefore performance enhancing - it is far and away more effective than competition legal calmers.

I have also heard that Relax Me works well. My friends horse can be jumpy and spooky sometimes and during the winter they use this and it calms him down. We dont have all day winter turnout at our yard so it works well for him.

Check out ProKalm. Amazing stuff. It even stopped one of ours from weaving!

Thanks for the advice guys!

She doesn't compete so I don't have any restrictions that way, so I'll definitely have a browse of the valerian stuff.

Shay - She's been great on the placid with full turnout (approximately 2 years) but it doesn't work for her when stabled, maybe because for her it's such a big change? I'd definitely say try it! Ideally I want to find something stronger just to help her adjust and then switch her back if at all possible!

I moved my nervy pony off Equine America Magnitude and on to brewers yeast and salt and he is miles calmer than before

I had great results with relax me. Horse had been on box rest for about 6 months and was rather excited about life in general, too much to contain when ridden and doesn't know how to lunge, still couldn't be turned out, but advised to ride out at walk - turned dangerous so stopped immediately and started the relax me. Used a higher dosage than written on the tub after speaking to the guy that makes the product who advised it would do no harm to overdose to a certain degree, and once it was in his system he was almost angelic again (about 4 day loading period). I then spoke to the maker at your horse live, thanked him for his help and he promptly gave me another tub of the stuff for free - lovely guy to talk to and really does stand by his products. If it doesn't work contact him, he will either sort out a new mixture of product (as in made to measure product for your horse, or refund I believe).
I would definately use it again if needed

Sounds great, can I order it online? If so did you go to a specific website, or phone the guy for it?

My local tack shops sell it so I am quite lucky there. I am sure you should be able to get it online without any issues though. It's called Horse First - Relax Me

Good luck with whichever product you end up using
