Which car?

I am looking to replace my old Discovery as I no longer need to tow. We do live in the countryside so I would like something that can cope with a bit of snow and some flooding. I have a greyhound sized lurcher who travels around with us so would need a big enough boot for him (not having to fold seats down as toddler will be in the middle). Apart from that I am not too fussy. I would prefer a diesel as I do not like filling up every 5 mins. Will be buying second hand and looking to spend up to around 5k.

It depends on what you budget is. I have a focus that is great on diesel and a perfect sized boot for a labrador. With winter tyres on you should be ok in the winter but any car would be a problem on flooded roads.

My sister has an audi a4 estate which is a great size for her lab too. Automatic but not sure what it is like in the snow as again she has a toyota hilux and the car stays on the drive.

That said, I also have ford ranger which is great for the winter and floods.

Probably better in here than the Club House. :)

I have a Smart forfour which does aver 60mpg & has space in the boot for a Borzoi.

I didn't notice as I search by new posts :)

Anyway - it is dog related as the car has to be suitable for a dog!

I'm also interested in this - I sold my Kia Sorento and am currently car sharing with my OH and his Civic Type R.

Our lurcher is a big girly - near greyhound size and although she fits fine in the boot of th civic and has space to stand/sit/lie, I want to make sure that my new run around has enough room for her!

It is difficult these days as so many cars seem to have a slanted back which really reduces head height for tall dogs. We had a mondeo estate before which was excellent but not sure I want anything that big this time. A Toyota Rav 4 looks like a possibility ir the Honda CRV.

I had very similar criteria and ended up going for a Subaru Forester which I could not be more pleased with (except for the fuel bills, 2l petrol, yikes). A Honda CRV was next on the shortlist. Would have had a Skoda Yeti if they were in budget!

My friend has an old CRV and should be able to fit a hound behind the seats (she folds them as has 4 greys) she was complaining about it being bit guzzly getting about 26mpg lately.

Our peugeot partner(Berlingo) is bit higher than average car but only 2wd so doubt its great in snow off main roads, so maybe better for jinglebells. Our houndmobile can fit 2 behind seats & has no boot lip & tall/square back ( its 1.6 D gets about 48mpg ave road tax £125) i like that its flexible and rear seats tip forward & easy to remove if you want a van layout. It has a smaller cheaper to run

Thanks for the recommendations!!! I had an xtrail previously and while I agree it would be perfect size wise, I really don't want another 4x4 as I found them very expensive for parts (and my cars are known to break!)

Jingleballs. Why not go for a Mondeo estate? We have had 2 previously and they were fab. Huge boot, reliable and cheap to run/maintain. Wish I had kept mine now.

I have a Berlingo which has been adapted for wheelchair use. It's turned out to be brilliant for putting different sized cages in and the dogs can either go in via the side door or the older dog can walk up the wheelchair ramp so doesn't have to be lifted in/out. It's also just the right shape and size for a couple of bales of hay/straw and the wheelchair ramp makes it really easy to get them in and out. Cleaning is also dead easy as the floor is a sort of lino-type thing - no carpet to hoover or wash.

That might be something to consider...

I've got a VW Passat Estate 1.9l diesel - goes like a dream and 45mpg even the way I drive. Four greyhounds in the back either in the boot or with the back seats folded depending on how far I'm travelling. Mind you, before that I fitted 4 greyhounds in the back of a Renault Clio :p

I like Rav 4's as they seem to go on forever and put up with a lot of abuse (friends and family have them). I personally have a jeep which my local garage keeps going but need a car to tow with. However (and this is ridiculous bearing in mind I live in Surrey!) I would be completely stuffed in winter without a proper 4 x 4. My village is 1/2 mile off the main road but bring on snow or rain and we are stuck.
