I own a 15.2 Bright Bay Gelding (irish cob). He has alot of bone and feather (which I clip off all year). Some people have suggested he could do small hunter classes while others say I should hog him and show as a maxi cob. Can a hogged horse do both classes?

If you have never shown him before i would assume you would be intending to compete at a fairly local level initially.

I would probably go for a small hunter class as suggested. However, if he is very cobby i would opt for a cob class. I had a similar Irish mare i competed for a client and she was bit big (chunkiness wise) for hunter and bit small for cob so i stuck with hunter as didn't want to hog her (but we competed at county/ national level).

Hogged or not hogged would not matter too much at low level competitions. Difficult also to say without a picture of said horse. Best thing is to enter a few classes and see what the judges feedback is.

As ******* said enter classes of both hunter and cob(un hogged) and ask the judge politly for feed back. I have always found judges(in the main lol) are so keen to advise and give hints - explian that not sure what to do and see what they say - must say you have a rather nice horse there. very yummy :) xxx

He is a cob :)

A small hunter is meant to be a mini middleweight, whereas your boy would be much more suited to the cob classes :)

Yes, following on from my earlier post he is definately a cob! Would hog and do cob middle/ heavy classes. If you had an interest in doing working hunter type classes many shows now do a working cob class too :)
