what clip is best for a horse that goes out during the day and in at night?

Any one you fancy, and rug accordingly to type, location and weather.

Ditto this.

Sophie is fully clipped, apart from her legs as she kicks out rather nastily if the clippers go below the top of the leg, even when sedated!! She's 20 years old and ridden 2-4 times a week.
Out during the day in a MW turnout, in at night with just one MW stable rug on.

if your not rugging - just take the belly off - and especially if it's a pony as they're quite resiliant little things...
if you have a rug - take off what you want and rug accordingly

To make a good decision you have to take into account the amount of work they will be doing as well. Mine are out in the day & in at night & they are worked almost every day & compete each weekend.... they both have all off & both are rugged.

Depends on how much work the horse is in and whether it feels the cold.

I'd go for a trace chaser or blanket clip unless you are doing a lot of heavy work. Just helps them keep warm when being ridden and means you have less rugging to do.

Really it's not how much work they are doing it's how much they currently swet when they are doing their normal work.
For example my pony rarely swets other than her girth area even when compeating so I only give her a bib clip.
But a friends cob, got all over swetty even when walking round the block so he has a full clip.

Whilst mine don't work that hard during the week, they do get worked late and need to have rugs on quickly and not left damp. They are thick skin, thick coated breeds so I do have to clip.

Stinky my gypsy cob is a hot working horse so he is hunter clipped. Farra, the clydesdale is not as warm when worked so she is blanket clipped, but with all her backside left on. She will also be hunter clipped in January as I like to have all the coat off and they are slightly rugged up a bit more so they both have thin as possible summer coats.

Any horse can be full clipped and go out during the day as long as they are rugged according to the weather. Mine rarely have more than 200 g rugs on unless it is below 2 when they go to the 300 rugs, but all horses are different.

So in short, if your horse gets very sweaty and you have no time to dry off, then hunter clip. If they don't sweat up or need to be dry quickly then a trace clip may well do the job.

Sorry I can't be more specific.

Why not start with a trace/chaser clip and see how you get on? I did this with mine, and found hes still really sweating up when ridden so hes having it all off (apart from legs). You can always take more off, you cant stick it back on again though!

I feel happier with a trace clip knowing that mine is out 6am to 6pm, i don't worry if it is really horrible outside. Having said that, she has little coat and doesn't sweat much. I would start with a small clip and go from there. You can always take more off but can't put it back on!
