Toto (connemara cross) grows a very woolly coat, infact he's already very fluffy, today he was hot and out of breath when we did about half the amount of jumping that he usually does absolutely fine

In winter we're hoping to be competing in some small dressage competitions, and maybe showjumping and a bit of xc schooling. He's currently ridden 6 days a week, schooling for about 30mins-45mins, jumping, some hacking etc. but that will decrease in winter as the ground and weather permits. He'll probably be ridden around 4 times a week

It's just not a case of 'oh we'll do this clip and then if he's still sweaty then we'll clip him more) as he has to be sedated to be clipped so he can only be clipped once a year, last year it was November, kept him nice and toasty and it lasted till around March!

Just intersted to know what other would do

If he could only be clipped once I'd probably give him a hunter clip if he was mine so it would last longer.

Generally with clipping I start with a blanket clip and then see how the horse goes. D has spent whole winters with a blanket clip although this year she'll probably have a hunter clip because she's doing quite alot of work.

trace, blanket, chaser will he be in at night?

I have to take franks neck fully off as he would still get very sweaty when trace clipped as it seems to be his fluffiest part.

tasteofchaos - Forgot to add, not asking for advice, just wondering what others would do

He had hunter clips for the past 2 years, he coped well , however debating the idea of a blanket or hunter coz he gets a bit whizzy if it's cold and he can't have a exercise sheet on, say if we've gone sj or something, guess he gets a cold botty!

imagining that he prob gets wooly like frank I would give him a blanket. it means I worry less about him getting cold when standing about SJ etc.

ester - think woolly mammoth and a bear rolled into one

Well a few years ago when I did a pc rally, before he was clipped, it was indoors and for an hour, with jumping, he got sweaty all over, but we're not doing pc anymore. So he won't be doing that amount of work indoors again. It's difficult to decide with Toto, coz you can't just get the clippers out and take more off whenever you feel like it

We've tried everything to de-sensitize him, but he can't even tolerate little battery powered trimmers.

He does get whizzy after he's clipped, I'm wondering if he'll be better if he's still got a furry back, then we wouldn't have to faff around with exercise sheet all the time.

Perhaps he could have a high cut blanket clip...

dope him and hunter clip him and rug well! why cant he be clipped 2 or 3 times? is it the cost? try to tie vet visits in with others on yard for shared call out! if he gets hairy and sweats a lot what you save on vet and sedation you will spend on feed to keep condition on! catch 22

I was going to say a high blanket clip. I did this on my old sj pony years ago as she was out (rugged) during the day and loose in an indoor and at night (we hadnt got our stables built at the time and she was on free livery). Being loose in the indoor would be a bit colder than being properly stabled so felt she may need some hair on her body. She wasnt as whizzy that winter as those where she was clipped out (when she could be impossible to ride) even when actually stabled.
So yeah, Id say a high blanket may be the smartest answer.

a chaser clip wouldbe quitegood it leaves enough hair on for them not to get cold could you not use the syringe sedations that you can get from tack shops i use these before clipping to calm my boy out first as he gets realli figgetti and then i get annoyed if the lines arent straight * im a perfectionist*

I would go for full clip straight away! If he has to be sedated and he is that bad will save loadsa hassle and time! Just keep him well rugge dup and the hair won't grow too much! - Mine had already been clipped (full!)
