Which clippers to buy?

Having just bought a 2nd horse I think it is time for me to invest in clippers rather than pay a friend to clip for me. I have clipped a few horses in the past but have never bought a set. There are 100s of different types/makes and not sure which would be the best to go for. Both my horses are stabled at night so don't get that dirty, are good to be clipped and are fairly light coated so would probably need clipped no more than 3 times a year at most. The stables have mains electric available. My budget isn't huge, I just need something which will do the job but not ones which are suitable for clipping dozens of horses on a regular basis. I also wondered if trying to buy a 2nd hand pair could be false economy? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.
 
I have the Liveryman Harmonys. Not good for a really thick coat, but I clip regularly through winter so it's not so much of an issue. They are battery pack or you can use them on the mains and are really quiet and get the job done.
 
I have used several pairs of Lister clippers over the years and liked them, I then had an expensive pair of Prestige (like Hauptners) which I hated. This year I purchased a pair of these

used them for the first time the other day and they are fantastic, really powerful and blow the hair away. For the money they cost I am extremely pleased with them. Spare blades are normally available on ebay and I paid about £18 a pair for them, much cheaper than the Lister ones!
 
I'm never sure about going second hand with things like clippers as if they break you can't really return them to anyone and never know how well they've been cared for - might be me being paranoid though :p I know they did have a large selection of clippers at Equestrian Outfitters when I got mine but that was a few months ago!
 
Which ever ones you get make sure they are not the sort that

when you take the blades out there are two slots which are reinforced with tiny metal linnings as these come loose and get lost (you don't notice at the time), then the blades wear away the actual clippers.

I have some lister stars which so far I am very pleased with, they are nice and quiet and seem quite powerfull, I used them to clip a very thick-coated hairy cob the other day and they managed him fine, they are also nice and light to hold which means your hand doesn't get tired from holding them as I have found with some other clippers! I'm not sure if they'd cope with very heavy duty (eg, lots of horses one after the other), but I'm sure for your two OP they would be fine.

Saying that sillygillyhorsey, I wish I'd known about your clippers when I bought mine as they seem very good value!
 
i would go for new. my choices would be in order of preference .. wolsley, lister, heigner. make sure when you buy them they fit your hand size, and dont feel too heavy.
 
another vote for Liveryman Harmonys, i got the mains ones for about £100. Have no prob doing full clip with them, there great!
 
I have small hands and struggle hugely with Heinegers.

Love my Listers, and a friend has Listers which are great too - mine are Libertys and run off a battery pack, hers are Stars and mains powered.
