Hi everyone. My teenage daughter has asked for a new 'horsey' coat for chrimbo that will actually keep her warm. She loves the Mountain Horse majesty jacket but its over £210 and thats just too much :(
We can go up to about £135. Any suggestions please...

Mountain Horse are fab, but no need to spend that much.... Have had one for several years, not really thick but only need a Tshirt underneath. Otherwise Musto... If you work in it don't worry about the latest model but good quality will last longer and be warmer xx

If you want to get her something that will really keep her warm and is fully functional, I would tend to the more sailing type brands as they really know about wind and cold and how to insulate, yet allow freedom of movement

I have this jacket

I got mine from the equestrian clearance website for about £90. Its warm, comfortable to ride in and smart too.

If she wants to be toasty warm and doesnt mind a non-horsey brand then get a quba sails jacket from ebay.( far too expensive new) I have one of these and they are fabulous, nice long back on them to keep your bum warm and very hardwearing

When it is really cold I will be wearing my £7.50 coat from the country shop which is a bog standard fluorescent workman type coat. It is really warm (and practical as I can be seen) and extremely warm. My YO also wears one and she has all manner of expensive coats to choose from!

I love my puffa coat, it's not waterproof in really heavy downpours, but in the cold, I don't feel it at all.

I have a spooks jacket for everyday, the Lola jacket, and it is very very warm, but personally wouldn't wear it on a yard. It's not that long, so when you bend over, it lifts up at the back. They do a longer one, but don't know how riding would work in it.

Have had various ski jackets over the years, but my puffa is definitely the warmest.

Tbh the hv polo and spooks jackets linked to are just cheap polyester anoraks branded for the horsey market. The aldi gear will be just as good (maybe better ). If she just wants something to look good fine but if she wants something to keep her really warm and dry whatever the weather forget horsey brands.

Look at outdoor gear like north face, berghaus, mountain equipment, mountain hardware, tog 24 etc. Look out for goretex to guarantee waterproofness. Down filling is wonderfully warm but not easy to clean.

For cheaper gear try decathlon or go outdoors but avoid the riding sections. Regatta is worth a look for the cheaper end too.

I got a musto arctic rider jacket from equestrian clearance half price at £75.
Its waterproof with a down lining, its really nice!
A few places had them on sale if you Google them, they come in red and navy.

Down filled jackets are the warmest imo. The North Face jackets being the best (based on lower priced jackets). I don't know if you can get Carhartts over there but they are also super-warm. When it's minus 20c or 30c here I wear a down jacket underneath a Carhartt jacket. Pikeur down jackets, I have a fair few of them, they aren't up to really cold weather, but they're fine for spring and autumn.

Agree, down is by far the best for warmth
