I have a graded mare By Ferro out of an El Corona mare. Although Dressage bred, her competition career has been in BSJA. She is only 15.1hh and has bred a foal in Holland before coming over here.I am planning to put her in foal next year with a view to selling her foal and so would like to use a commercial stallion within a budget of £1000. I cannot decide on a stallion and I am not sure whether to go for a dressage stallion or show jumping??. Any suggestions please. I ought to add that her first foal was by krack C and was entered in to the main stud book, so she is defo worth breeding from.

We have been looking at stallions but we want to keep our foal.
Are you thinking 1000 plus delivery as Johnson is 1000 but will be more with delivery. I think.
How about Treliver Decanter and Le grande .I wouldnt breed for just colour and you may not get their colour anyway but if selling colour can help being unusual. We are also looking at Wolkenderry. There is a stallion day at Harpbury on Jan 5th

If breeding to sell whether it is for showjumping or dressage then it definately has to be one of the big european names i would say.
If you are breeding for yourself there are lots of lovely English stallions available but in all honesty there foals will not command the same sort of money as some of the big foreign names.
Had a lovely Rousseu foal born here this year ,definately improved on the mares weaker points.
A well bred dressage foal by a foreign stallion could easily fetch 5-6 thousand pounds wheras one by most of the English stallions wont (not because the stallions arnt good enough)because you can go abroad and pick from a hundred fabulously well bred one for the same money.

With Ferro x El Corona, I would go the dressage route - they are well known, highly regarded names in the dressage world, much more so than in the jumping world.

Flemmingh blood has always nicked well with Ferro, hence why her previous owners probably bred her to Krack C. Krack C is a fantastic stallion but he is getting a little old now and on the premise that we breeders are always trying to improve on the previous generation, I think I would breed to one of his sons or grandsons instead.

How about Vivaldi or Zhivago? They're at the top of your budget but both have a bit of size and are highly regarded, popular stallions in Holland. Their offspring although not really old enough yet to prove themselves in sport are doing well exceptionally well in the gradings.

Thank you everyone for y0ur suggestions, I am busy looking the stallions up on the net. I too wondered about using a son of Krack C. A stallion parade would be useful, might have to take a trip to Holland as well. Thanks again, keep em coming.

Not to put a dampener on your plans but please dont think using a well known stallion will help sell your foal over her for decent money. It also has to be marketed really well, super photos, lots of info, even if its a stellar foal.
I bred a superb filly this year by Furst Romancier out a beautifully bred mare (stallion and mother line) and sold her for peanuts compared to what I would have sold her for if I had left the mare in germany. I might as well have used a British based stallion for half the price for all the difference it made commercially.

Ditto.

Blue Hors Romanov offspring seem to grade and sell well, I don't know enough to say how he would match with your mare.

..... and there, regardless of the discipline, is the voice of reason.

Horses are currently selling, it seems to me, for one of two reasons; Either they will sell upon their own merit, or through clever and well placed marketing. The Sire, whilst not an irrelevance, is a secondary consideration, almost.

It's time that sport horse breeders took a long and hard look at the TB industry.

Alec.

Why, why, why? Have you SEEN the market over here? If the foal doesn't head for the meat market, the one it pushes out of the currently saturated market will. And this goes for everyone.
