I know this should be in vets, but more likely to get a response in here from people.

Bit of a long story... my horse had some kind of incident about 3.5 years ago getting caught up in some wire, or a similar incident. Passed a two star vetting (by a proper "old-school" horse vet), and he was very happy with her, got a few lumps and bumps, and sore withers, but nothing major wrong with her.

Started off ridden work very well, but then started to play up a bit. Had a check over by an oesteo/chiro type, as well as a couple of visits from local physio. Also had a thermal scan done.

Thermal scan showed hotspots along back, in shoulders, on bottom, in hocks, two hooves and areas around TMJ. Osteo found a few things, but nothing major. Physio found more muscle issues, mainly chronic tension, as well as various places of muscle atrophy (which I knew about).

Had x-rays done of front feet, which has shown that some changes need to be made with farrier, but nothing too major. It is hoped that this will resolve the shoulder muscle tension. Had a shiatsu massage lady out after the physio/xray visit, and she also found a lot of muscle tension one side of her. (Please note, this was merely to help relive some of the discomfort, and under no illusion that this would cure her.) Thought this was rather interesting, as it either shows that something is causing the tension, or she needs a lot of physio/massage sessions to eliminate the problem.

Anyway vet is coming back out this week to xray hind feet and hocks, too see what is going off in there, as well as one on the neck (around a spot of atrophy, that was a hot spot on scan, and an area osteo said was sore) if possible. Will also be scanning ovaries to see if they are causing any trouble. Whilst I believe we may find some issues going off in the hooves/hocks, I don't think it will be anything major.

So to the real reason for the post; assuming the vet wont find anything too major, what are people's thoughts on the next diagnostics. Horse is uninsured for back/pelvis/one front hoof (due to findings on vetting), therefore I need to be very careful about what I do next. I am aware we could take the horse into the surgery to xray back and neck for KS/other problems in this area. We could also ultrasound other areas to see if any damage caused here; or I could ask for a referral for a bone scan to be done.

I am very aware that this all depends on what the vet says, and what is found, however, I want to consider all options before the vet decides for me. At the minute, I am thinking it may well be worth getting the bone scan done, so I can check the whole horse over (in case of pelvic injury for example), then move on to xrays/more diagnositics, when problem area has been located.

Any thoughts, and sorry for a long post!

Fully prepared to pay for it myself... thats why I am leaning towards it to try and get to the problem area, as opposed to xraying every possible part of the body first! (Just think of back xray of £500, and if it doesnt show anything lots of £££!), whereas at least the bone scan shows the whole horse.

Obviously if hoof and hock xrays come back horrendous, this hopefully will be the source of the pain!

Also shop around!!
Ask how much for cash upfront on an uninsured horse.
It's amazing how little extra medication or extra nights livery they need if the insurance company isn't paying. I got a full body done recently (all in - livery, drugs, scan, VAT) for just over 1K

Really, thats interesting. Just had a quote from one local vets firm, that was a good bit over that. Out of interest whereabouts roughly are you based?

Central/south - bill was nine hundred ish plus VAT, so thinking about it 1.1K

They took him crack of dawn on the monday, and I picked him up wednesday evening

Other local vets quoted 1.2K plus VAT ...

If you dont mind me asking, which vets was it done through? May be in the right sort of location for my horse...
