If I was to get a Small Dog (and not a Spaniel

) I would go for a BT based purely on Stella, she is fab. They seem like such HUGE characters in compact little packages.
I was going to suggest a BT or a Cavi, but they have already been suggested

If the damn rabies laws didn't exist, we could do a summer exchange: you get crazy Stella for a while, and I get the proper running partner I've always wanted (sorry, Stells

).

To the OP, if you're looking for a small dog that is a gentle companion, then think Cavalier, Bichon or Lowchen. If you're looking for a comedian and best pal that will keep them entertained for hours, think Boston terrier, American Eskimo dog, Pug, Beagle or a Cocker.

For a slightly bigger dog, but something smaller than a Lab, I've always loved Duck-Tolling Retrievers, and I should imagine they'd be excellent with children.

I love duck tollings! they are like SUPER red collies (but slightly smaller! they are like mini collies!) which almost makes them more attractive except im a bigger dog person (beau still needs to grow some! the tiny b*gger!)

For small dogs, Im a cocker lover! my housemate's mum has one and she is a princess but will sit and behave when told, and when left to play will do it for hours!
Border terriers are also great!
And I agree with lurchers too as I think they are lvoely dogs (and shed less than the other 2 if you were worried about grooming and mess etc)

But if u want the bigger size...... lab!

I will stick up for CKCS as well. I think my wee one would be physically incapable of knocking over a child, however small

I want my dog nowwwwwwww

Oh and I believe Cala is in my area, when i am closer to the time i will be looking for one I will deffinatly ask her if she knows anything.
I would love to rehome a dog but to stop my grumpy Border eating the poor thing I wthink it would need to be young.

I agree Pugs are the funniest little characters, I personally have grown up with Boxers, but when I moved in with my OH we got Leo a white Pug then a couple of months later we bought Cookie a black pug. They are very loving and mine can be abit lazy

How about a patterdale?

We have 4 of them! (and we breed them) they have fantactic temperaments and huge personalities, they are fab at ratting and very intelligent and trainable.

We don't have children yet but whenever our have been round kids they are very sweet. We have sold previous pups to homes with small children and the only problems have been the pups knicking the kids toys!! LOL!!

We actually currently have a litter of 7 that are only just 2 weeks old....and we aren't far from Durham!!

Here are some pics of some ours...

The main man... Fox Folly William (Stud Dog)
