We live in Shropshire and eldest daughter wants a career in horses, she leaves school in may so we are looking at where she can go ,Walford is the nearest, had a look yesterday at an open day and we weren't overly impressed, but didn't dismiss at this stage, next ones to look at are Reaseheath and Hartbury, has anybody got any recommendations or opinions on any of them??

If she wants to really get going with it, an apprenticeship is also a good option. Many of the top eventers and large commercial yards offer apprenticeships which covers the same qualification but paid, on the job training which often is viewed more favourably by employers :)

If she keeps an eye out and contacts any yards she's interested in now, she may be able to get a few days work experience in too before someone takes her on. PM me if you want any help with the apprenticeship route, I work with a lot of employers... ;)

What kind of career would your daughter like with horses? If she is looking to do something very much practical, such as grooming then I would agree that an apprenticeship or working pupil position is likely to be much more useful to her than a college qualification.

If she would really like to persue the college track then I would recommend she take a good look around both the college and the local area and see which she would feel most comfortable at. Ask lots of questions about the course, the facilities (including how often the students get to use them. Some colleges have incredible facilities but the students rarely get to use them as they are a commercial entity). Warwickshire College would be worth a look.

I've just started at Warwickshire college, but also visited Reaseheath, Bishop Burton, Writtle and Sparsholt - I could pm you about them if you like? Would definitely recommend going to see the colleges as your opinion about them may change once you're there.

Oatridge, up here in Scotland, also got a very good rep, I know a few people who have gone. However I do agree with the apprenticeship/working pupil comments though - unless you go down the proper uni Equine Science track I don't see how an apprenticeship doesn't give you more of an advantage plus being paid...

Our local one, Duchy, is very popular amongst the local farming / equestrian community which must say a lot for it.

I haven't heard great things about hartpury but my friend went to reaseheath and said its amazing. Bishop burton, riseholme and brackenhurst are very good too but that might be to far for you?

I looked around Morton morrel (sp?) when I was looking at higher education, it was very lovely and I was offered a place but I went to Bretton Hall and did music instead! (Had a fab time but sadly now closed).

Myerscough isn't a million miles from you and I've heard good things about it.

I'm currently at bishop burton and really do enjoy it, they've helped me every step of the way have spaces for your own horses to live in along with you and the facility's are brill!

I work for SRUC, and also attended one of the Agri colleges in years gone by before they all merged. Out of the 3 Oatridge would not be my first choice for Equine!
