My mare has been on TopSpec cool balancer, TopSpec cool condition cubes and TopSpec top chop from the end of last summer which I am really happy with the results bar one thing.... she keeps getting thrush!
She has never had it before and it only came about when I started feeding her this. I was hoping it wasn't the feed as other than that she is looking the best she has in years, so I have been trying to treat it with different things which gets rid of it for a month or so and then it just seems to come back again. She also has a deep central sulcus from the thrush which is proving even more difficult to get rid of.
I have read before that some horses on TopSpec suffer with Thrush?!

Any advice to what I could switch her to? She is a barefoot TB coming back into work after the winter. I like her on a balancer because it maintains her weight well, I also love the cool condition cubes as I use them as a little boost when she needs a little extra weight! If possible I don't want to spend a fortune on feed per month.

Any advise please? :)

Bluegrass do a feed called cool n condition. I have my mare in it atm to try and put some weight on her before bringing her back into work. She's only on it 2 weeks but it is working really well so I totally recommend it! They do a balancer as well but I haven't tried it. Is there a specific reason you want to keep her on top spec balancer? If not it should be easy enough to find another good quality one without any side effects :)

Forgot to put in that Bluegrasshorsefeed.com is their website

Well the only reason I was skeptical about changing the feed was because she really is looking so well on it! And I like the idea of her being on the same feed brand throughout her feed. People had suggested something like the Pro Hoof supplement but she already has a joint supplement, angus castus for her seasons and linseed oil so I don't want to add another supplement if I don't need to really.

I haven't heard of Bluegrass, I will have a look! Thanks :)

I'd personally swap the balancer for either the Pro Hoof or a Forage Plus balancer as I don't know a lot of BF horses who get on well with topspec and these forage balancers contain a higher spec that is essential for hoof health

Thanks ellie, I am convinced all these problems have come from the topspec as she has always had fantastic feet and this has all started since moving her onto topspec!

0310Star. That is interesting as the only time I have ever used Top Spec one of my horses got Mud Fever. He never had it before and not since. I only ever had him on it for one year then took him of it.

All mine are now on Baileys Lo Cal Balancer and have not had a problem , including my barefoot mare.

I didn't want to believe it paulineh as I was so happy with the feed and how well she was doing but I have tried everything to get rid of this thrush and nothing is helping! I get rid of it and as soon as i stop treating it comes back again! She also had a small patch of mud fever too which she has never had before now you mention it.

Now its just a case of what to change her over to, I am thinking I may go back to basics.
