Which feed is best???

For a 5 yr old podgy mini shetland. He has topspec antilam for the nutrients and want something to bulk his feeds abit so he feels like he is getting a feed!!! I have narrowed it down to these but tbh it all baffles me!!!

Anyone ever used these or have any preferences?
 
avoid the happy hoof if he is podgy, i've heard its full of ingredients that aren't too good for lammi prone ponies (and with a podgy shetland you'd want to be careful.) I think theres a feed for fatty ponies that like to eat, has like zero calories but bulks food so they can still get a dinner, can't for the life of me remember what its called though! Other than that I'd go for hi-fi lite
 
Happy Hoof is specifically formulated for laminitic horses and has been approved by the Laminitis trust. Please don't be put off from using it - we've always used it on ponies that are a) overweight or b) have been prone to laminitis and have never had any adverse effects.

To be honest I don't think you'll go far wrong with any of them as the pony is getting the nutrients from the Topspec, so whatever you fancy - just don't give too much.
 
Happy Hoof, I have podgy shetland too ( not so podgy at the mo tho!) They love it ; he is prone to lami and hasn't had it for 4 years now. I give 1 scoop twice a day, with a vit and min supplement (baileys low-cal) add well watered down speedi-beet or kwick beet so it makes it moist
 
Happy hooves out of those choices, but I actually prefer Dodson and Horrell Safe and sound now. YO was recommended it after her horse went laminitic, and now almost our entire yard is fed it. Her shetland gets a handful for his feed, and wolfs it down

The logical choice would be the Dengie Hi Fi Lite as it is unsupplemented, and you are feeding it alongside the Antilam which provides the vits/mins. I think the other three are already supplemented with vits/mins. However, if he doesn't like the Hi Fi (which some don't) then try the Happy Hoof which is very palatable. (Although it is already supplemented, I suspect you will only be feeding a handful which won't supply many vit/mins anyway).

Don't let people put you off Happy Hoof - it seems to be one of those internet conspiracy stories that go round and round! The product does contain a small amount of molasses (which explains its palatability) but the overall sugar content is very low. I maintained my very lami prone pony on it for many years with excellent results.
 
I agree with TGM, all the choices apart from the HiFi Lite already have nutrients in so wouldn't necessarily be the best mix with the TopSpec. However if you're only feeding a small amount of chaff then it probably won't make much difference if you fed the HiFi Lite of something else. If you fed the recommended amount then it would. I feed my fattie on Bailey's Lo-Cal and HiFi Lite and she LOVES it, she also loves Happy Hoof (most of the yard feed it and YO says she's not yet found a horse who doesn't).
 
I would only give him sliced carrots to be honest so he thinks he's getting a feed!
He's better having more hay so it takes him longer to eat and leaves him less hungry. Our thirtysix year old mini shetland has survived looking wonderful on nothing but hay..(and the odd mineral block)
 
I used to feed our old shetland Happy hoof. He adored it, and felt he was getting something. With Happy hoof you won't need the top spec.

But if he's that podgy I'd just give him literally a small handful of Happy hoof and watch his hay intake. Shetlands really don't need ad lib hay like bigger horses.
