Hello,

I have searched this topic but nothing came up so apologies if this is a duplicate question.

But as the damn biting bugs are starting to attack what is a safe repellant to use on mares with foals at foot. All the ones I have looked at say keep away from mucous membrances, eyes, nose, mouth etc. As foals nibble, chew mum etc then anything I spray / wipe on mum has to be mega safe.

Please please can you experienced knowledgeable breeding people give me some advice as to how I can save my mare and filly from these bighting blighters... :(

Much appreciated
Amanda

Haven't got an answer - sorry! But I too would like to know :D

I do spray with Avon Skin so Soft so she doesnt get bitten but I would like to know if Spray Gold DEET is safe to use on an in foal mare or for one with a foal at foot if anyone knows?

Thanks x

I am bemused does no-one use fly spray on their broodmares or those with young foals......?

Surely they suffer with fly's just as much as any other horse if not more with those big udders?

I have plastered her mane and tail with nettex soothing fly gunk stuff to hope that offers some relief poor girl.

You can safely use EQyss marigold fly spray - think the name may have changed but you can find it on line. Also there is Flypor which is licensed for cattle and is safe for calves over one week old and for cows being milked, so long as it is used six hours before the next milking. It is effective for several days but I'd ask your vet about it as it is not licensed for horses. It was recommended to me though and does work. I believe Absorbine Ultra Shield Green is also safe for foals but I haven't checked recently - that will be easier to buy, probably. Hope this helps.
