After a new mare rearing up, falling over backwards and landing on my leg (breaking it!) I am beginning to feel a little more safety concious and have decided to invest in a new hat (mine made a horrible noise when i hit the deck last week!). I'm currently riding in a champion ventair hat, which i found comfortable but I'm not convinced about the safety of these type of hats anymore! I know they meet all the current safety standards, but I can't help feeling more safe in a nice sturdy skull cap! I'm liking the look of the the champion (like the ventair, but without the fixed peak), and the Charles Owen J3...but I have to admit I haven't really looked around! Looking to do a bit of eventing over the summer, so would like something with as good a safety reputation as possible! I'd also like something with ventilation ideally, price not really too much of an option- as long as it keeps my head in one piece!!

Any recommendations, or types that I should steer well clear of?

Thanks!

Gatehouse HS1 (The one with the flesh harness on it)- tried one on the other day really comfortable). As I don't event though, I ended up getting Charles Owen Wellington Classic which is PAS015, EN1384 and SEI certified- I can vouch that it offers gd protection as I hadnt fallen off for 16 years and then I hit the deck twice in one week- had to chuck out the brand new hat!! and buy a new one- my saddlers thought I'd gone mad buying 2 in a week! ... I do think that hats vary though depending on your head shape- I have a really awrkward head shape and tried 20 on in one weekend, the above 2 were the only ones to fit me!!... gd luck

the gatehouse one - its amazing!! got mine a few weeks ago - tried my old one on the other day and it was horrid!! you'll love this one - its comfy and incredibly light and its small too - doesnt look like youve got a flowerpot on your head - worth all the money i think!

I allways think of this happening when riding alone in the forest, it will be good to see what people come up with, in the hat department, as I'm afer a new one too..

Hope your leg gets better soon.

the charles owen kids helmet is good too - meets every safety standard and is cheaper than the others!

Actually the ventilated hats are just as safe if not safer than most jockey skulls (discussed on the Mark Davies Injured Jockeys Fund Website)

In fact the Champion universal scores as well as the ventair that beats the Gatehouse Hi Spec 1.
