which hoof oil to moisturise in this dry weather?

The horses shoes are becoming loose after just 3 weeks shod, can anyone reccomend the cheapest way to moisturise them please as I've heard bog standard hoof oil doesn't help?

I use cornucresine daily hoof moisturiser as it's better than oil and won't fry the feet in hot weather but as your horse is shod don't use it on the sole as you get squeaky feet - sounds just like squeaky shoes:)
 
I know that it quite common to use wet carpet where they eat a haynet so that the feet can absorb what they want rather than what you put on?
 
I hear a lot of good things about Kecin Bacon's hoof oil. I even own some. But still I feel like such a bleeding idiot missing something obvious that EVERYONE knows but me, but..

I'm using effol summer hoof balm..... Although it looks suspiciously like Vaseline cunningly disguised in a fancy tin lol
 
Water! Seriously. You need to hose or sponge hour horses feet every day. No oil is going to add what's missing which is water. Feel free to use any nourishing product (not oil!) as directed by the product AFTER watering daily.
 
My farrier advises that 90% of the hoof's moisture is internal so the trick in this weather is not to spend hours hosing / tubbing and trying to introduce moisture, it's to keep your horse well hydrated and keep what's in there trapped inside rather than letting the ground leech it out. He recommends regular applications of vegetable oil and, apart from one pre-existing crack which we're in the middle of growing out, my two barefooters have chip-free fab feet.

Yes - I was going to ask whether hoof oil actually moisturizes by itself, or whether it tends to act as a barrier keeping water OUT as well as IN?
 
The others thing that helps is having the horse out overnight and then they get to stand on the grass in the morning that is wet with dew.

And my farrier says not to keep the stable too clean and dry. In other words its not such a bad thing to let them stand in a bit of poo and wee. Obviously there is a balance to be had!
 
ive used kevin bacon on my pony that had extremely dry feet, using every day for about 3 weeks has made an incredible difference, not much change in the first 2 weeks. I put it on in a cleared floor stable and leave it to soak in for a few hours where I can't be rubbed off in the grass.
 
I disagree with Kevin Bacon. I found that once I started using it, I had to use it everyday and use lots of it and it didn't seem to make any difference! A lot of fuss about nothing if I am honest! I now use NAF Hoof Rub once a week and this puts all of the essential moisture back into the hooves (I can tell the day after applying as the hooves are a lot darker and feel moist for days after) A pot lasts ages too - would definitely recommend! :)
 
Frank found kevin bacon was better for eating than for doing anything to his feet :rolleyes:. Never used it myself but aqueous cream is often suggested as doesn't have the grease properties of many of the others.. ie keeping water out as well as in.

WTH is going on with the rolling eye smiley ......
 
Actual hoof oil is no good for anything but making feet shiny and should be removed after a show. I have to admit I don't even use it for that anymore!! I use Kevin bacon once every few weeks to keep nail holes bacteria-free and stop foot degrading. I use cornucrescine tea tree oil when showing to give a bit of shine.
