I have no experience of hospitals other than transporting to leahurst for a fellow livery. Which is best out of Leahurst or Newmarket for hock injuries? Is there any difference? My mare is only very slightly lame but has a swollen hock which is not going down. 2 sets of xrays done 3 weeks apart show no bone probs and an ultra sound shows no ligament damage, a tap showed no dodgey fluid so we are at a loss. I have 5 days of anti-bs to inject and then if no change she is off to the hospital.

Seeing as you are in Yorkshire, have you considered Rainbow Equine at Malton, that is a referral centre.

I haven't been there but will be in 2 weeks time :( .... I have chosen it over Leahurst, even though it is considerably further away.

Why did you choose that place? I haven't looked into any yet...only found out today and from OH as I was working so I will question the vet more when I speak to her Tuesday. I'm really worried about her as she has had this swelling for 5 weeks now and it has not gone down and vets have tried different stuff. She would have gone to one today as vet was apparently baffled but a vet from one of the hospitals rang my vet back and asked her to try some other stuff including the anti-b injections. If only they could talk!

I chose Rainbow because they are a smaller practice and I am hoping it will be a bit more personal that Leahurst.

Also, mine needed nerve blocks but even under sedation and twitching, she objected violently. Leahurst would attempt to do these themselves again, but Rainbow are happy to go on my vet's recommendation of going straight for Gamma Scan and accepting the x-rays already done without going through the whole malarky again.

Even closer than any of the ones mentioned (I think) is Hirds Equine Practice at Shelf - which is on the Halifax/Bradford border (just below Queensbury in Bradford). The Head vet there, Peter Scholefield is brilliant and the facilities are very good - they have MRI there.

I'm not sure why the vet at Churchfields never mentioned Hirds as an option as they (Churchfields) usually send the horses to Hirds for MRI scans. I am hoping the injections will sort out the prob but day 2 of injections is still showing no reduction in swollen hock. I am so worried about her :( and vet is concerned about the swelling on the inside of her hock...I will be speaking to the vet on Tuesday so will know more about available places for her then.

Would definitly recommend Rainbow, there the vets I've always used as we're only a few miles away and they've been so good. Were excellent when my pony went extremely lame and needed a operation and for all the other injuries he's had.

What about Ledstone Equine? They are horse specialists and are out towards Castleford, about 15 minutes from the Selby junction off the M1 link road.
If Star has to hve her eye removed, that's where she'll go.
