Hi. I'm about to loan two old ponies for my children to ride. They are 19 and 27. I'm looking into insurance and trying to keep down the costs, can anyone recommend a company? Thanks
I think this is something you need to discuss with the owners, you will only really get cover for injury/ death as they are older and the owners need to decide what they would want to happen if they did have a serious injury or life threatening illness, in my view it would not be fair to put a 27 year old through extensive treatment or surgery and I would not expect a loaner to pay a fortune to do so.
If they are already insured the best thing is probably to continue the policies otherwise I would get a good contract stating what would be expected if they had something like serious colic and just have 3rd party/ public liability insurance, keep a fund for the normal minor injuries that may occur and be prepared to send them home or pts if something long term arises, it sounds a bit harsh but the owners of the 27 year old do have to be realistic.
Having had a quick look the NFU seems to offer the best policy of up to £3k vets fees but like most there may well be exclusions when you apply.
Our old pony is nearly 30 and not insured. They won't cover much at that age so I just take the attitude that we look after him as best we can and god forbid if anything happens to him we decide how much we'd want to put him thro or how much I'd be prepared to spend. I dread the day anything happens to him as he's one in a million.
