Hi, I have recently had a bateson horse trailer but decided to upgrade it. I don't know which is the best horse trailer to get, it will need to be quite big and stable because it needs to carry a 16hh horse!
I've got my 16.1hh in an Iforwilliams 505. It's 10 years old and looks brand new. I've had 16.2hh horses in also and had plenty room, though only as pretty short backed. But very robust trailer. Mental flooring so doesn't rot and are very reliable!
Thank you for all the advice everybody, although I had read somewhere that the new ifor williams 511 rots very easily, does anybody know whether this is true?
With the modern materials trailers are made of these days, I doubt any new one would rot easily. Providing they are cleaned and maintained they should last for years.
We have an older Ifor 505, our 17hh good traveller, fits in easily, we also did a nine hour journey with it, delivering a 16 2hh mare, she arrived calm and relaxed, after taking two and a half hours to load, stroppy mare
I travel my two 16.2hhs in a Bateson Ascot and think it is excellent, particularly in terms of design for ease of use. Also ramp opens away from the carriageway.
Whats wrong with another Bateson OP? Get the top of the range Ascot, its easily roomy enough for a 16hh - I take my 17.1hh in it all the time with no problems! Personally I find Batesons better than Ifors and as pootleperkin points out, the ramp actually opens the correct side for unloading in an emergency at the side of the road (unlike Ifor and many others).
I have an Ifor 506 and my 17hh horse fits in it with loads of room to spare, had no problems with rotting and haven't heard that rumour.
MagicMelon- If you get the Ifor new you can chose whether to have a left or right unload http://www.iwt.co.uk/products/horsebox/hb506?tab=features
Bateson any day. Built quality is far superior. Excellent customer service and warranty that they stand by. It's just a shame they only do the white colour.
We had a Rice for many many years, it was huge and plenty of room for our large IDxTB that my mum had at the time. I now have a Sinclair Ambassador, it is a lovely wide trailer with plenty of headroom.
There were a few teething problems with the new models in ifor Williams 506/511 they don't rot but they were going mouldy, all have been recalled. There were also horror stories about them not being tested etc but they have redesigned the new models and corrected mistakes. I know the 505/510 have gone up in price as they are seen as the stronger box infanct your lucky to find one much lower than 3000 even at 10 yo!!! I'm interested in this post as I've owned at 510 classic- fantastic and now have a 20 yo 510 which I would like to change. I have horses all of which are 14'2 so don't need a huge box. I have never even looked at a Bateson or any other make but perhaps I should!!! Keep posting reviews peeps!! Would love to know more honest reviews about all possibilities!!!
