Which is the best option?

Do you think Racing is detrimental to the horse's welfare?

Pony is v green so unusual fillers/jump configurations can give her a bit of a fright.. should I get out to lots of shows and just keep at it - or buy some really scary fillers from jump4joy and stay at home practicing over those for a while? The jumps are not the problem, 'tis the fillers...

we have a full set of jump for joy jumps, which are brill and very sacry looking, well worth the money, none of our horses do stopping at fillers now! bUt I would also get out and about as much as possible, maybe just go schooling if you can and hire out an sj course so you can set it little an build confidence.

I'd say its more important to have a few lessons where theres some spooky fillers so you can do them over and over again and do some comps whilst at home make your school scary (and round stables too) and then make fences scary randomly (ie jumping fence couple of times then slinging coat on it).
Spooky horses need lots of repeats so they almost get bored and have no reaction to spooky fences.
I have no fillers at home but "improvise" so they learn to jump whatever you tell them too.
Good luck

I agree with friendly horses, improvise at home, the jump for joy fillers are expensive and once you horse has decided that those particular fillers are no longer scary he will jump them happily but other things may still be scary. I would spend the money you save on going to low key stuff and having a look at different scary things.

We have jump for joy fillers and they are brilliant - the one with flames on it seems to get an all round eyes on stalks reaction even from quite experienced horses! Having said that also think that you can make some quite scary stuff too so depends how flush your feeling! A mixture of both your options is probably the best bet.

I agree that working at home is best. I have a young pony who we're training up and she learns much quicker in a quite familiar place. Even if she does still have the occasional day when everything she sees is a monster!
