I know they do two different things, so it might not be right to compare them?

I like the massage pad, but they don't, as far as I am aware, cover the quarters at all.

I like the use of magnets, having felt the effects on my back from magnets in a back support thingy.

The neds aren't in need as such, but I hear good reviews about both these products as good general mainenance, so thought I'd get one.

Does anyone have both and use them?

Hot chocolate, with cream and sprinkles :D

Have the massage pad but not the magnetic - I did try get them on the deal through pre-equestrian but missed out! I have no idea if the massage pad does anything but my horse certainly seems to like it! I probably should use it more often really to see any effects.

I would like to try the magnetic one as I certainly think our old dog has improved a lot since we got him a magnetic collar so i do think they do something!

My reply really isn't any help is it!

No experience of the magnets personally, but I would buy the massage pad over and over again...its been such a worth while investment for me!

I have a Welsh Cob who can get quite tight through his back, which affects his canter work. Initially I borrowed one but I found it was so good I very quickly bought one. Since then our schooling session have been much more productive, he's soft over the back from the start and he has not had any treatment from the back woman, just check ups. She was very pleased with him last time she visited :)

L25 - yes, it was helpful, thank you :D It seems that horses like the actual massage pad. I wonder if hand massaging does the same thing. Sure I had a book somewhere on horse massaging... The magnets do seem to have a definite effect. There is a lovely user on here, who's name has just escaped me!, but she' recommended magnetic treatment before. Hm. *puts thinking cap on*. I know I've definitely felt a difference after wearing the back thingy, though I don't understand how it works

TBC - thank you :D. This is what I've heard about the massage, that the back softens and tightness is eased.

CAT - thank you :D. If it's not a daft question, is there a reason you use the magnetic one but not the massage one? Is the magnet one easier to use? Have you found you getter better results? Do you have the bit for the quarters? Sorry! Many questions... :D

I have both and it easier to throw the magnetic rug on rather than the massage pad, and having to remember to charge the batteries etc.

I like using the combination of both though.

Haven't had a magnetic pad but did manage to get an armadillo? rug cheap once at Robinsons - because it had lost most of the magnets  In the end we just either sewed our own magnets into rugs/boots etc (friend into the magnet therapy stuff picked up very strong ones for us, sewed them in so they had alternate poles face down I think?) or peeled away the padding on boots, stuck in magnets, returned padding! Worked just as well and I do like the magnets although found it a bit annoying that they shouldn't be left on too long so couldn't really just leave on overnight, and otherwise they werent on long enough! This might only have applied to the stronger magnets though? :)
Have heard good stuff about the massage pads though and would love to at least try one! Dan seems to like his massages when I can be bothered giving him one... :D

T - thank you :D I'm thinking the ease of use of the magnets is appealing, but on the other hand, so many horses seem to like the massage one as well. I have a feeling it's going to be both :D

S - thank you :D. Sounds like magnetic fun lol. Mine are out 24/7, but stand in for a short part of most days when in work, so whatever I got on would be on then. I'll have to read up on how long they can be on for. D is good at remembering to charge batteries, so I'm alright on that front. I wonder, if I got both, then the neds could alternate with one each day. Or, maybe it would be better to use just one for x number of days, then swap, see what the differences are.

am i CAT? If so, its much easier to use the magnets!!! its just like a normal rug but heavier! there are no batteries to run out on it and there is nothing to break if the roll. i got ours from pemier equine in the sale.

Yes, you're 'CAT', sorry, being too lazy to type out full names....:cool:

Good points re. the ease of use :D

I've heard that the reason that massage pads produce such amazing results is because they overstimulate the nerves to the point that they effectively shut down for a bit to recover?

Just had a quick search online and 4hrs seems to be the general recommended maximum?? :) I think I would be tempted to use a magnetic rug most days (I may actually remake one... I gave the armadillo rug away to a friend whose horse had lameness issues!) and for travelling to comps etc? and would perhaps use a massage pad a few times a week or if horse seemed particularly stiff/after particularly hard work? Hmm.... definitely could be interesting to compare the two!

Yikes. Hadn't thought of the rolling in poo bit...

And m'brain must be addled re. what I've done to your name. I think I need to go to bed lol.

L - not heard that before. Would that be the same for all massage I wonder, is that how it works? Spot the person who's never given this much thought before!

You can now buy the hand massagers by Equilibrium, cheaper option and something you could do after a daily groom rather than waiting about with the pad on and making sure its charged etc.

My back lady recommend me to get one, which I will do when I've saved up, she also said you can move them further back onto the loins but obviously you need to make sure its secure etc.

Ta K :D. The hand one could be a good plan :D.

Just thinking, from what I've seen of the pad (only pictures), how one would secure it further back.

Hm. *Feels an increase in the shopping trip - will have them for m'birthday, which isn't for ages yet, but it's good to be organized lol*

Slightly off what you’re asking about but we have a back on track back warmer & we’re having really good results with that. It goes from the withers to the quarters(obviously will cover a different amount depending on the size of the horse) & is held in place under a rug with a front strap & surcingle that we’ve added (there is a velcro strip you can add to a rug to keep it in place that way instead) & our boy thinks it’s great. We got it on physio advice when she fixed his back that was almost totally in spasm down one side to keep getting some heat into it & stop it from going back into the spasm in between visits.

He’s much looser now when he comes out, is working really well & if he’s had a hoolie round the field & comes in looking a bit tender it keeps the heat in & stops him seizing up. Apparently there are very small ceramic beads woven into the fabric which absorbs body heat & then radiates it back so in effect you become self warming. We tried it on us first & it definitely works. They do human products too & I'm seriously considering some of their socks for the yard this winter!

right!...... I have the following ...

massage pad - good for massage before work if time, popping on to travel. if worked hard nice to help cool muscles down or if a day off nice to massage. - downside - takes half and hour so if short on time (say riding before work) i dont have time.

Magnetic rug - made myself as cheaper - bought kit off equimagnets took two evening =s to stitch them all in, placed over shoulders, back quarters areas. good for travelling, i leave on under a turnout and CAN be left on for over 12 hrs. bioflow say can be left on pretty much 247 if you had a mega stiff horse. I dont. I built it up to overnight and then every 10 days or so i leave it off for 2 days

Magnetic Boots - Bioflow boots - have the brushing boots (for turnout) and wraps (supposidly for stable) use both for turnout!!! - the wraps are ventilated and better in summer and dont make legs sweat. I only use intermittently. winter i use alot more and will swop back legs during day and front legs at night.

Massage Mitt.....watch this space.....have ordered one and should be here today!!!!

I know i seem to have a lot of stuff - previous horse was arthiritic and i did whatever it took to keep her supple. current horse not arthritic and has no issues BUT - i find her more soft and supple after using magnetic rug overnight (and more relaxed?) - the massage pad does help soften back too - i have used it on quarters and neck (stand there holding it on!!! - but the mitt should be good for this now)
I do hand massgaing but i have weak fingers and cant do it for long - did buy a hand held person massager for £20 from argos but not really very good)

hope that helped!!!!!
marie

Sorry I meant to say my back lady recomended the massage pad not the massage mitt, as in you can move the massage pad back, the way I worded it sounded like I was on about the mitt. :)

It's the massage pad for me! Ummed and Ahhed like you over it, was lucky enough to try a friends and then bought one - my boys love it and as said before, are softer and much more supple.

Have the equilibium massage pad - would recommend it!

:D

I've got both, love them both but tend to use the massage pad more prior to flatwork/ competition/ travelling. It chills my boy out massively and he we avoid the previous 10 mins of tension and resistance. I use a magnet rug to travel. I also have magnet boots and when I was at Bramham I got a powerful magnet fetlock band- a bit of a fan to be honest!!!
The massage pad was a lucky lucky win! I won it in a competition!!!

Thank your for all your experiences folks :D. I'm at work, so having to be quick and cant answer everyone individually :(

I'm thinking magnetic stuff, including boots, to use daily. Will have to alternate or get two/four lots . Then the massage pad and glove for weekly and before/after comp use.

I'll let you know how we get on :D

I have an equilibrium massage pad - I'd really recommend it.

I dont know very much about magnetic treatment, but was warned that strong magnets can make you/horse feel quite unwell. I was also told that if you go for a cheap option, the magnets arent strong enough to do anything, so the more expensive ones are best :-s

Not that I am advertising as it is nothing to do with me, but I saw a massage pad with a magnetic pad tofor sale together on British Dressage classifieds for only £150. Seemed a bargain for both as the massage pads are normally over £200 I think!
