Which is warmer??

O.K. feeling guilty now, as suggested my friend didn't put a thin cooler type rug on her unclipped pony (even though forecast is for -2C), as my understanding is that the pony will be able to keep itself warmer if it has the ability to fluff up its coat, which it wouldn't be able to do with a cooler on. So I'm fairly sure I suggested right, so why do I now feel guilty now!!!

P.S. Pony is stabled over night, with plenty of hay, is a good doer, is carrying plenty of weight and bares a strong resemblance to a wholly mammoth!!!
