Hello

not been on here for ages..hope everyone ok. Please can anyone advise me on....

I'm looking to buy transport, a small box that will carry 2 ponies. Approx/max 1200. I have a b b1 licence. I have ruled out a trailer as having something to tow it with will be too expensive as will mainly be used as a kids taxi!!

Thanks

1200 max horse weight 2 horses..is that payload? I know I have to then add persons and tack etc...

If you have horses that weigh around 1200kg then you'll have trouble finding a small box to carry them. The best payload you'll get with one of the small 3.5 tom boxes is 1200kg & many are quite a bit less. When you factor in tack, water, yourself & possibly a friend you'll be well over the weight limit for the vehicle..

Thanks I had a nasty feeling about that lol. Best put in for my 7.5 training! Any idea what 2 people tack etc weighs please? Guess it's either me and my horse or more money if I want to phone i mean bring a friend !

Depends on the size of the ponies/horses.

I have a renault master van conversion that has been 100% reliable in the 6 yrs I have owned it, and swear by it. We have 2 x 14.2hhs and a 1200 kg payload, so can carry both, but only just.

If larger, you may struggle with a 3.5t, and they are not always the cheapest option. For example my conversion cost £9000, but if I had a pre '97 licence I could have bought a reasonable 7.5t for a few grand less.

Hope that helps!

2 x 14.2hh - 950 kg
me - 70 kg
son - 40 kg
2 x tack - 20 kg
water - 10 kg
rugs/grooming kit - 5 kg

So approx 1100 kgs but you need to allow fuel as well (if travelling both I only put in enough to cover the journey). These are only random guestimations but I know I am not overwight as have been stopped by VOSA on a routine check. We had to drive over a mobile wighbridge which we passed, but annoyingly they wouldn't tell me the precise weight.

Soon adds up!!
